Reduce the Entertainment Time

in #blog5 months ago

I look at my phone's battery tracker and realized the past few days of screen time have mostly been spent on entertainment than learning.

Oh no, I got myself caught in the poverty trap without realizing it. I'm not saying immersing yourself in movie marathons is going to make you poor. I'm saying spending more time being entertained than allocating those times learning something useful is one way to guarantee being poor.

Money flows out when you pay for entertainment. And it's not just money being spent but also the most important resources you could have in the world, your time.

I could be watching a few more episodes of anime than reading a textbook for my chosen career, but the former doesn't earn me money. The latter gets me job security to sustain my entertainment time.

This is what I see that's often being wasted by an average person. The one's that are benefitting from your attention are corporations that program you to think less and be trapped in the cycle of entertainment.

Read more about how theta waves emerge when you default watch long hours of TV. Happens on your mobile phones. The brain switches to passive mode when you're in front of the screen long and this lets you become prone to suggestions and propaganda.

Your phone is designed to hook your attention. Keep those notifications pinging 24/7. Taps into your fear of missing out and your social circle is also hooked into it. Check you phone, see which apps consume your screen time more and evaluation how much time should you really be spending on these apps if you're only given 24 hours a day.

Thanks for your time.

Guilty here 🥹 But sometimes I try to remind myself that the kind of entertainment I enjoy isn’t completely useless, somehow, it still connects to my career. but there are moments when I catch myself feeling guilty, thinking I could’ve used my time for something more productive.

That’s why this year, I promised myself to focus more on creating rather than just consuming. Sana nga maraming ma-create na aligned sa goals.

This was such a good read. Even when your posts are personal, they always seem to hit right when I need a tap or a reminder.

Good to hear, hope you can maintain the momentum. I don't think entertainment is all that bad as long as you're getting something out for your time that lasts. Documentaries about people, history, and ideas that one can apply in their immediate lives are entertainment I find worth indulging.

Kahit anong ganda ng scenes sa movie, malabo parin magkakaroon ng werewolf na best friend trying to survive the zombie apocalypse.

Pero watching how businesses are made, the people who made them and their stories are my productive form of entertainment.

Thank you and take care!

This is so true. I know about how everything on social media and ads are programmed to keep your attention (the most valuable thing right now) but I didn't know about this passive mode and suggestions. I should read into that. I am also a victim of keeping myself entertained so long and it has been worse with ADHD lol so I am trying to keep myself offline as much as possible by painting or switching off wifi when trying to sleep. :D

If you stare at the screen long and get overstimulated, the brain tries to shutdown some parts of the heavy executive decision making like fact checking, or being aware, to question what you're seeing as it's less straining to the mind to just accept whatever is shown and told. This is how people unknowingly turn their brains to being suggestible and just take what is shown as is for now.

Yung mga visual effects ng pantasya, alam naman natin fake but to immerse ourselves sa story we just let some parts of it go and don't question the minor details, do this longer and you just stop bothering and take things as is. It has a purpose naman, if you keep asking and be critical, you never get to enjoy the fantasy genre as entertainment. Now think of how this small concept applies to mass media where information that is true gets mixed up with lies until it's hard to tell some bits apart.

Definitely a thing to watch but also make sure you don't get sucked the other way into toxic productivity, it's just as bad :)

I'm a ticking time bomb due to being predisposed as a workaholic but only when I'm locked in at something which can span for days to weeks. For now, it's just obsessing over calorie counting weight loss. I hate it because I can't bring this enthusiasm to more things at once.
