I read gardening books and watched gardening videos that recommend mulching to reduce the frequency of watering. I was too lazy to prepare mulch and didn’t follow the advice for long. But this year I found a super material in a book: HAY! Using hay was eye opening. Hay for small pets is available at almost every drag store. I covered most of the soil surface in pots and planters with hay. It’s almost 30 °C these days but I have to deep water every 3-5 days while I water some thirsty ones time by time. It’s so easy going.
In a book I read hay doesn’t work for wet climate. It becomes nest of slugs … But so far at my place, East Germany, it works fine.
I’m so happy with the result. As it’s an organic material, not like plastic film, I can put it in compost pile or mix in soil when I change plants in between seasons.
ガーデニングの本や動画で土をマルチでカバーすると土が乾きにくくなって水やりが楽になると知り、重い腰を上げて動物用にドラッグストアで売られている藁を買ってきてマルチしました。そうしたらもう水やりが本当にびっくりするほど楽になりました。30度近い日々ですが、水が足りなさそうな鉢やプランターには都度水をやりますが、基本的には3-5日に一度がっつり水をやるのでよい感じです。
藁は地域によっては加湿になり、ナメクジの温床になるといった意見もあり、他のものでマルチするようですが、私が住んでいる東ドイツでは今のところ機能しています。
マルチ、水やりが楽になるし節水になるし、いいことだらけです。藁は季節の境目の植え替えの時に土にコンポストするか、すき込んでしまおうと思っています。

余談：こちらはマルチと私が植えた金蓮花と雑草がせめぎあっている唐辛子ゾーン・・・。ここも以前ほど水をあげなくてよくなりました。

ワラは家の土台にも米作りにも万能なので、気になる存在です（まだ未挑戦です。）確かに！野菜にもいいはずですよね。
雪が降る前、土に落ち葉をよけずにかぶせてましたが、夏のワラも試してみたいです！
