Gender gap in salaries, but what about other gaps?

in #steemstem5 years ago (edited)

In the strange world of the year 2018 comprehensive understanding of mathematics is no longer a virtue.

Basically, all I hear is a word salad made of stupidity.

For example:

Immigrants are 3-5 more likely to commit serious crimes (serious injury, rape or murder) than German citizens according to the official statistics for 2017 (more about it in a separate post)

NPC: But not all of them are terrorists

Men and women are nor equal, because... Biology... Very obvious biology. Biology I knew before I was 6 years old...

NPC: You hate women and some women are even stronger than men

Men and women are paid equally in every civilized country for the last 50 years

NPC: there is a gender gap and men are paid more for the same joooob!!!

No you NPC morons, women don't choose to work in certain professions

NPC: but men and women should be paid equally, because they are equal

No, my lovely NPC, let the women be who and what they want to be.

Map of divided Germany, from Wiki

Because people are not equal, and making them equal in terms of money they make is simply abysmaly stupid

If you don't trust me, just look at history.

There was a "reboot" after WWII + Communism = inequality in Yugoslavia immediately after
the collapse of Yugoslavia, new "reboot" = new opportunity to earn and lose
Refugees (real refugees), without anything, with a plastic bag = some gain their ground in a year, others can't find themselves two decades later.
Transition to capitalism, "reboot" = new shuffleing

Imagine that, in my country there were at least 3-4 reboots in the last 30 years, and yet, we are all equal for about a month - how's that?

Let me show you the absurdity of "gender inequality"

Let's check something completely different, like - height

In the paper: Up in the skies? The relationship between body height and earnings in Germany, by GUIDO HEINECK, the professor compared 24.000 employees from the Eastern and Western Germany with their body height.

And he found some interesting correlation...

I gave you the link to Scholar.Google profile of G.Heineck as he has at least 5 interesting papers with spurious correlations that are eye openers.

On average, Male Western Germans are 179.7 cm tall, while the Eastern Germans are 1 cm shorter. Female Western women are 166.9 cm tall, also 1 cm taller than Eastern Ger-women.

Workers were split into 3 groups:

  • above average height
  • average height
  • below average height

And the differences were incredible!?

  • For the Western Germans: 3287 vs 2983 vs 2524 Euros
  • For the Eastern Germans: 2443 vs 1888 vs 1843 Euros
  • For the Western Ger-women: 1835 vs 1671 vs 1451 Euros

What happens if we "increase the resolution" to 5 categories?
Not much...

What we see is the "s-curve", with the slope of about 1-1.5% for every cm for the height nearby the average height.

Is this true, tested...

Sure it is, there are studies in Canada, UK, USA, Brasil, India, Africa... Wherever you run the statistics, the results are the same.

Even other "spurious correlations" are clearly visible, such as the handgrip strength.

What should we do to fight inequality?

I have no idea... Maybe we should impose progressive taxation for every cm, impose mandatory kneeling for all the people taller than 180 cm or, I don't know, have equal number of tall, medium and short people in companies and parliament.

Or... We can let all the people pursuing their happiness and their style of living by giving them equal opportunity to develop, and not by promising them equal outcome (equal from our distorted perspective about the meaning of the word "equal")

Now, let's have some comments :)

I like this.

I take a risk by answering this--nothing to gain, but I do hope to increase understanding by sharing a perspective that is likely unfamiliar to you. It has nothing to do with mathematics--I'm not good at that. It has to do with life.
I'm a woman. Of a certain age. Much older than you.
When I first started to work, I took a job with a philanthropic organization, one well known around the world for 'good work'. I was a secretary--I hadn't earned a degree yet, so that was fine. But after a while, I noticed a few things. Everybody who was a secretary was female. Everybody who was a 'principle' was male. Coincidence? Maybe. Luck? Maybe. Then I realized where the executive restroom was and where the restroom for support staff was. Interesting, that the executive restroom was the men's room. The restroom for support staff was the women's room. Not a good sign for promotion.
So, as soon as I got my degree I left. I sought employment in what was a traditional male field--because I needed money badly and I figured that was the way to get it.
I was right. I tripled my salary. However, the resentment on that job was more than palpable. It was physical. I was actually told I could not work in certain areas because I was a woman. I was actually assaulted--yes. No details there--I'd rather not.
All I ever wanted from my first job and my second job was to have my gender disregarded. I wanted a fair shot. Didn't want special privileges.
It's a crazy world. Bureaucrats try to remedy a horrible, unjust situation with stupid unjust rules. I agree with you about that. But as a smart person, you should try to come up with a way to make things fair without making things unfair.
I know this will probably anger you. I don't want to do that. I just want you to know where the drive for "equality" comes from.
Of course I'm a feminist. What's my choice? But for me that means, please ignore the fact that I'm female. Just give me a chance...an equal chance. I'll take care of the outcome.

Just give me a chance...an equal chance. I'll take care of the outcome

Full upvote from me for this sentence

There's no gender gap. Women make different choices than men. We are all different as individuals. Some women can and will take the jobs of higher status but they will need to have the drive and will power to do it. We just need to understand we are different and as long as wr make choices that makes us happy everything will be ok.

SJW should stop worrying and find some sort of hobby :D

We should simply let men-people and women-people to live their lives as they want.

But average SJW is the same creature as average flat earther

impose mandatory kneeling for all the people taller than 180 cm

lolololol. Luckily for me, I am only 157 cm I do not have to kneel. What to say about the post, hmmm... I was always curious to learn about English word for ravnopravni. It is not the same as jednaki which we know means equal. Jednaki and ravnopravni does not and never will have the same meaning. Možemo biti ravnopravni ali nikada nećemo biti isti.

Slavic languages rule!

Yes, this pay gap between eastern and western Germany is really annoying.

Maybe, I should go back to the west.

About the other facts: That's to far from my profession.

But fighting the pay gap is a good idea.

Regards

Chapper

I'm the one who is always supporting free will.

If you want to have 5 kids - great
If you want to have 5 PhD and no kids - fine
If you want to travel the world with a backpack - fantastic

As long as it's your choice.

Very soon I'll move back to the East to earn 50% of my current salary - and I'm very happy with that decision.

What I don't like to see is focusing on a single aspect of life (money) and the single difference (sex/gender).

In Serbia, we have an expression: Što ispravljaš krivu Drinu? (Why are you trying to make the river full of bands straight? ) :D

Considering GER, I can't believe that there is the difference 3 decades lates...
