End of winter melty season

in #snow5 years ago

Hello, steemians! Welcome to my page, eh!

Winter doesn't usually end for us in this area in March, but we do start getting days above freezing. Most of this past week has been consistently above freezing, which has created a lot of snow melting and compaction, and a lot of water runoff and pooling. The temperature went back down below freezing today, but the forecast is calling for more above freezing temperatures for next week. Yesterday, after the several days of melting, the temperature was just right for some fog. We don't normally get fog here, so it was pretty interesting to see. This was my neighborhood yesterday.

This isn't the really dense fog like along the sea coast, but it's still pretty cool to see it once in a while.
The melting has made it a lot easier to get into the greenhouse now. The frost hump in front of the door is now gone, and more bare ground is starting to show.

Of course, along with the melting comes the water pooling in the low spots. There's a low spot in the back of my greenhouse that ends up as a big pool in the spring, and sometimes after heavy rains. I'm hoping to get more gravel in there this summer to raise the floor level so it won't flood like this. This will get worse with all the snow that still has to melt.

The melty weather has dropped the snow cover by probably 6 inches or so as of yesterday. The picket fence was almost completely covered by snow before this last little warm up, but now, it's starting to show a lot more.

It will be interesting to see how this melting progresses over the next couple of weeks with the forecasted above freezing temps for most of the rest of the month. It is possible that we may get an early spring this year, but I'm not going to count on that happening. I do think that April will be a pretty decent month, but then, it could rain all month also, that happens sometimes.

Well, that's all I have for this post, I hope you found it interesting!

well thats a project for this spring/summer. putting in proper drainage so the water drains out into your pool.

I'd be happier if the water drained into the storm drain.
Our pond is actually uphill from the greenhouse in the yard. The entire yard is on a bit of a slope with a low spot in the back by the alley. That low spot fills up with water every time we get a lot of rain, or when the snow melts.

I love snow.. and i love this weather..

end of season for you and start of season for me.... down unda !!! lolz. I must say it is quite a sight to see, we dont get that kinda snow in oz.

But the groundhog saw his shadow, winter is over! :))

Here in Western Mass the temps are forecast to be 50's days, 30's + 40's nights, too warm for sap to flow for sugar making. This is for well into the last week of the month. So looks like early spring maybe, here....

We are solidly into mud season, with a foot of mud in the driveway, until it thaws all the way through. Then it will be dust by the next day...

Yeah, mud season is coming soon here. When the snow melts off of an area, it'll turn into mud until the frost is out of the ground.
