Hello, steemians! Welcome to by page!
</centeI went up to my community garden plots again today to get a bit more work done on the garden beds to prepare for planting. The plot I used last year had a lot of weeds in it, so I decided to pull weeds today. Running the tiller through them doesn't get rid of them, it just tends to spread them if you don't pull them after you till them up. Also, I'm not sure if I'm going to till these garden plots or not, there's a lot of rocks in the dirt, some of which are pretty big. It's usually easier to just dig up where you're going to plant. Last year I loosened the soil with my homemade broadfork. In a small plot, a broadfork works well, but it can be a lot of work in a larger plot. I figure that this year, digging all the weeds will loosen a lot of the ground. I use a spading fork to loosen the dirt so that the weed roots come out easier.
There's a lot of weeds to dig this year. I already had a bucket full when I took this picture.
Lots more weeds to go.
I found this while digging weeds. These rocks are why I hesitate to run the tiller through the plots. This is a tiller killer rock. You can bend tines when you hit one of these, or possibly break something if the tiller isn't up to the abuse.
And then, sitting next to the first tiller killer, I found this one. These were both about 5-6 inches below the surface. This is a chunk of concrete, demolition debris.
I was at the community garden for a couple of hours and I managed to get a fair amount done. Of course, I'm not done yet, there's still plenty of weeds under the stuff covering up the ground. I was trying to slow down their growth.
The weather is supposed to be crappy this weekend, so I probably won't get back to the community garden until next week. I would like to get the potatoes planted up there next week, but that will depend on the weather. I bought the seed potatoes today, so I just have to get them prepared to plant, and I'll be ready for a good day to plant, once I get the rest of the weeds out.
Well, that's all I have for this post, I hope you found it interesting!
