The chickadees helped me plant a bunch of black oil sunflowers this spring, they tend to be a bit messy around the bird feeder. I let a fair amount of them grow because they're not in the way of anything, and the bees feed off them once they start blooming. This one clump of plants is the biggest of the black oil sunflowers and is the first of these to start blooming.
I haven't seen a lot of bumblebees this summer, but there hasn't been a lot of flowers in my garden this year. Now that these sunflowers are blooming, the bumblebees have shown up again.
Of course, once the seeds get mature, the Goldfinches and chickadees will be showing up to help themselves to the seeds. I leave the flowers on the plants so that the birds can pick out the seeds. I basically grow sunflowers for the bees, the birds, and because I like the way they look.
