Quiero compartirles en esta ocasión una pequeña reseña del libro del escritor Jorge Volpi, titulado no será la tierra. Esta novela histórica relata las vidas de tres mujeres que en algún punto entrecruzan sus caminos. La historia se desarrolla entre la llamada gran guerra y la guerra fría, ofreciendo al lector un amplio panorama de los hechos socioculturales, políticos y económicos de la época a través de la vida de sus tres protagonistas principales y sus familias.
On this occasion, I would like to share a short review of the book by Jorge Volpi, entitled Not the earth. This historical novel narrates the lives of three women who at some point cross paths. The story takes place between the Great War and the Cold War, offering the reader a broad overview of the socio-cultural, political, and economic events of the time through the lives of its three main characters and their families.
La obra se divide en un preludio y tres actos, separados por intervalos de tiempo en que se desarrollaron los hechos. El preludio describe los acontecimientos que desencadenaron el accidente de Chernóbil en 1986 y sus consecuencias. El primer acto: tiempo de guerra comprende los años de 1925 a 1985, el segundo acto: mutaciones ocurre entre 1985 y 1991 y el tercero: la esencia de lo humano va desde 1991 al 2000. En el capítulo 1 hay un salto temporal porque los sucesos pertenecen al año 2000, pero gracias a eso sabemos que dos personajes mueren al final de la historia lo que intriga saber es el cómo y el por qué.
The book is divided into a prelude and three acts, separated by time intervals in which the events unfolded. The preamble describes the events that triggered the Chernobyl accident in 1986 and its consequences. The first act: wartime, covers the years from 1925 to 1985, the second act: mutations, occurs between 1985 and 1991, and the third: the essence of the human, goes from 1991 to 2000. Chapter 1 makes a time jump to the year 2000; thanks to that, we know that two characters die at the end of the story, only the how and why are missing.
El libro tiene una amplia variedad de personajes de diferentes culturas y lugares del mundo por lo que algunos de los nombres pueden parecer difíciles de pronunciar, además en las paginas finales hay una lista de personajes junto con su rol. A continuación, haré una breve descripción de los personajes principales y su rol en esta historia:
The book has a wide variety of characters from different cultures and places globally, so some of the names may seem difficult to pronounce. Also, at the end of the book, there is a list of characters and their role. Below, I will give a brief description of the main characters and their role in this story:
Irina Sudáieva
Irina Sudáieva vive en la Unión Soviética, se destaca en su profesión como una mujer inteligente y dedicada. Conoce a su esposo Arkadi y tienen una hija llamada Oksana, los tres parecen vivir una vida dentro de lo común, es decir siendo fieles al partido y a su país. Todo cambia cuando un día Arkadi decide renunciar a su trabajo, él y su familia se verán atrapados en una serie de eventos desafortunados que llevan a Arkadi a estar preso a Irina a la desesperación de hacer todo lo posible para ponerlo en libertad y a su hija Oksana a ser descuidada por sus padres.
Irina Sudáieva lives in the Soviet Union. She stands out in her profession as an intelligent and dedicated woman. She meets her husband Arkadi, and they have a daughter named Oksana; the three of them seem to live a life within the ordinary, that is to say, being faithful to the party and their country. Everything changes when one day Arkadi decides to quit his job. He and his family will be caught in a series of unfortunate events that led Arkadi to be in jail, Irina to the desperation to do everything possible to set him free, and their daughter Oksana to be neglected by her parents.
Jennifer Moore
Por otro lado, se encuentra Jennifer Moore, una funcionaria del fondo monetario internacional, su función es ayudar a reparar la economía de países subdesarrollados, dentro de los que destacan su participación en Zaire y México. Jennifer es un personaje autoritario y con un carácter violento, vive en continuo conflicto con su esposo Jack Wells y su hermana Alison. A pesar de sus constantes peleas con su hermana, siempre acude en su ayuda. Todo se descontrola cuando su esposo decide emprender su propia firma bajo el nombre de DNAW, su objetivo es conseguir inversionistas bajo la promesa de que su compañía podrá conseguir una vacuna contra el cáncer.
On the other hand, there is Jennifer Moore, an official of the International Monetary Fund. Her function is to help repair the economy of underdeveloped countries, which stands out her participation in Zaire and Mexico. Jennifer is an authoritarian character with a violent personality. She lives in continuous conflict with her husband Jack Wells and her sister Alison. Despite her constant fights with her sister, she always comes to her aid. Everything gets out of control when her husband decides to start his firm under the name of DNAW; his goal is to get investors under the promise that his company will get a vaccine against cancer.
Éva Halász
Por último, está la especialista en inteligencia artificial, Éva Halász, para ella las cosas más importantes en la vida son la ciencia y el sexo. Eva participó en el equipo especializado para la construcción del escudo espacial de EE. UU que contrarrestaría cualquier ataque misil por parte de los soviéticos, luego de que el programa fue cancelado Eva pasa a ser parte del proyecto Genoma Humano liderado por Francis Collins. Todo cambia cuando Eva conoce a Jack y este la convence para que deje su trabajo actual y trabaje para él en DNAW.
Finally, Éva Halász is the artificial intelligence specialist; for her, the most important are science and sex. Eva participated in the specialized team to construct the U.S. space shield that would counter any missile attack Soviets. Later, Eva becomes part of the Human Genome Project led by Francis Collins. Everything changes when Eva meets Jack, and he convinces her to leave her current job and work for him at DNAW.
Otros detalles que me gustaría resaltar de este libro para quien lo desee leer son los siguientes:
- Se aprende mucho de historia, a pesar de que las protagonistas y sus familias son recursos literarios, las fechas, lugares, personajes políticos y científicos son reales.
- Los diálogos son de estilo libre, es decir que el autor no usa comillas, ni guiones, ni se cambia de línea con cada intervención.
- La integración de cada personaje a la historia es bastante clara, si uno se llega a confundir con algún personaje se puede consultar la lista de personajes al final del libro.
- Cada capítulo tiene un encabezado con el lugar y la fecha que ocurrieron los hechos en el que se va a hablar en esa sección.
Other details that I would like to highlight about this book for those who wish to read it are the following:
- You learn a lot about history; even though the protagonists and their families are literary resources, the dates, places, political and scientific characters are real.
- The dialogues are freestyle, that is to say, that the author does not use quotation marks or hyphens, nor does he change lines with each intervention.
- The integration of each character into the story is relatively straightforward, if you get confused with any character, you can consult the list of characters at the end of the book.
- Each chapter has a heading with the place and date of the events discussed in that section.
El libro es contado por un personaje llamado Yuri Mijailovich Chernishevski, un periodista y enamorado de Éva Halász, su rol en la historia es interesante ya que desencadena un final que no esperaba y que para algunos puede ser impactante.
The story is told by a character named Yuri Mikhailovich Chernishevsky, a journalist and in love with Éva Halász, his role in the story is interesting as it triggers an ending that he did not expect and that for some may be shocking.
