in #rpg6 years ago

I've now finally got the games concepts documented including the story line, and the large majority of game mechanics!

I want to share some of the key pieces without spoiling too much, all feedback is welcome on what you think might or might not work so well.

CORE MECHANICS

Player Actions - On every new post each player has a set number of actions in which they may move around the board and perform a number of functions such as walk, run, attack, search, craft etc.

Attack - Uses 1 action point per attack, attacking player rolls 1 D20. If a players roll is equal to or less than their total Attack points, the attack is successful. If an attack is successful the amount of damage dealt is equal to the players total Strength. A player may attack at any time, given they have the required number of actions remaining on their turn, and are within range of their target. Once a target is engaged, a player cannot run from the fight.

Defending - Does not cost an action point to defend, defending player rolls 1 D20. If a defending players roll is equal to or less than their total Defense points, they defend successfully. If a defense is not successful the amount of damage incurred is equal to the attackers total Strength. A player will always defend when being attacked, unless they have been rendered immobile.

So what I've done here is use the Attack and Defense stats to dictate the chances of a successful role with the D20. Increasing either of these stats gives you a better chance of being successful when you roll the dice. You'll notice that either an attack is successful and for full damage or it is nullified completely, no middle ground at this point.

Crafting - Uses 1 action point per crafting attempt. If all required crafting materials are present in the players pockets/bags, including instructions, then the player may craft that item. Say which item you intend to craft in your comment then roll 1 D20. If a players roll is equal to or less than 15 their new item has been successfully crafted. If crafting is unsuccessful no crafting materials are lost. Players will always have a 75% chance that their crafting is successful on the first attempt.

I'm a big fan of crafting, and believe that the best items in-game should be crafted, not looted or bought on a market. This is especially true in an apocalypse scenario where you're left to fend for yourself. For this reason all secondary skills will be crafting related, allowing players to craft special items as they level up their secondary skills. These skills include engineering, computing, militia, and the trades.

CHARACTER SKILLS

open-book.png

All new characters start with 5 attack, 5 Defense, 5 Strength and are given an additional 5 Primary skill points to allocate as they wish.

Primary Skills

Attack [your chance of a successful attack]
Defense [your chance for successful defense]
Strength [the amount of damage you deal]

All new characters are allotted 10 Secondary skill points to allocate.

Secondary Skills

Engineering [your chance of successfully crafting or repairing gadgets]
Computing [your chance of successfully crafting and repairing computers]
Militia [your chance of successfully crafting and repairing advanced weapons]
Trades [your chance of successfully crafting wood and metal items]

New characters will start only with the allocated secondary skill points. Additional points will be awarded in-game when leveling up, plus opportunities to train these specific kills will occasionally be provided.

ITEM CARDS

I'm making digital "tradable" cards for all in-game items that can be found throughout the world, looted from bodies or caches, and of course crafted using crafting materials and a recipe. The majority of in-game items will be tradable, and occasional an item may be character or account bound.

Until a wallet is developed to hold in-game items, items will be visible from within your inventory and can be bought, sold, or traded between players unless the item is character bound.

An example of some in-game item cards:

APOCALYPTICA wiki..

I've created a wiki through Wikia to help document in-game items, crafting materials, cooking recipes etc. It takes some extra time to enter all the items that will exist within the game but I feel it will be a good resource for players down the road.

I would love to find a wiki that's on the STEEM blockchain! I thought I saw a protect or two that was trying to do something like this. If you know of any projects doing wiki's here on STEEM let me know, would love to partner with them.

This is @agr8buzz, creator of APOCALYPTICA, thank you for reading this post and allowing me to introduce the game! I’m looking forward to contributing to the growing STEEM gaming community, let’s make STEEM the best gaming blockchain on the planet!
