Younger Futhark name: Thurs
Anglo-Saxon name: Thorn
Although earlier Elder and Younger Futhark names are often said to have been Þurisaz and Þurs, meaning “giant” or “demon” in their respective Germanic and Norse languages, the current forms may have originated in the Old Norse thurse meaning “goblin,” which in turn may have come from an Old Germanic name that is now lost. The Old English word þorn, meaning “thorn,” actually began with a unique type of letter called a diagraph, and while it looked like the letter P it represented the TH sound.
This rune symbolizes defense and changes that often come from disruptive influences. Although disruptions may seem gigantic and come from out of the blue, they are often inner demons. In regard to a thorn, this rune carries a protective quality and the strengthening of willpower.
When selected for divination or guidance, Thurisaz advises to be aware of an inner voice that may instill self-doubt. Such a goblin or ogre can be dispatched with truth and willpower. Citrine, lepidolite, rutilated quartz, and sapphire work well with the energy of this rune.
