The very luckiest moment of the day is 9.09 (a whole lucky Thai Buddha 'thing' & a post unto itself one day) so that's when it was. The first pole of the new house was raised, family was there to witness and offerings were made to soothe grumpy spirits & ensure prosperity.
Our Thai family is, like most Thai families, a little convoluted. Ed, the new home owner, is a cousin of my former Thai husband. He's the uncle of my half-Thai daughter, Ploi, and one of the Thai shareholders in our business, Pure Thai Natural Co. Ltd.. He lived with us as a young man while he finished school and has been, arguably, the most consistent male figure in Ploi's short life.
Normally there would have been monks present but Nee, Ed's wife, is a Hmong Christian from the mountains near Op Luang. So Ed managed the traditional offerings of coconut, banana, protective coloured ribbons to signify the sanctity of the pole, tobacco and, of course, money.
Ed and Nee have proudly qualified for a Thai government first home loan for low income people, having worked super hard, lived simply in one tiny room FOR 8 YEARS and saved.
It was a proud and happy morning for me as Ed's "spare mom". There were many days we didn't think he'd ever get through his early 20s. Lots of jokes from the builders about them needing to eat more to grow some. But family is really about heart & choice.
The completion date is estimated for October.
Wishing them blessings, prosperity & much joy as they work hard to create a place to start their long-awaited family.
