The Glory Is Not Always Obvious.

in #ecotrain5 years ago (edited)

The 'Glory Bush' is not considered a medicine plant by most herbalists or gardeners, and it's value totally depends on who you talk to. Some consider it a noxious weed. Something that fills a dead spot in a dry garden. Others just enjoy the magnificent blooms in their sub-tropical dry-season gardens. This beauty was showing off her magnificence in the Old City of Chiang Mai here in Northern Thailand just yesterday.

And yet, she (and the rest of her extended family) has far more value than you can imagine!! One of the hidden healing plants, if you will.

Clerodendrum quadriloculare is this Beauty's correct botanical name.

"Plants belonging to genus Clerodendrum are well known for their pesticidal properties, and various Clerodendrum species like C. indicum, C. phlomidis, C. serratum var. amplexifolium, C. trichotomum, C. chinense, C. petasites, etc. have been historically used as folk and traditional medicine to treat many kinds of diseases, such as cold, hyperpyrexia, asthma, furunculosis, hypertension, rheumatism, dysentery, mammitis, toothache, anorexia, leucoderma, leprosy, arthrophlogosis, and other inflammatory disease in various parts of the world such as India, China, Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Africa."

Particularly, "a variety of constituents have been isolated and characterized from this genus, including: monoterpene and its derivatives, sesquiterpene, diterpenoids, triterpenoids, flavonoid and flavonoid glycosides, phenylethanoid glycosides, steroids and steroid glycosides, cyclohexylethanoids, anthraquinones, cyanogenic glycosides, and others. Some of these constituents have been evaluated with a number of biological properties, mainly including anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive, anti-oxidant, anti-hypertensive, anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-diarrheal, hepatoprotective, hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic, memory enhancing and neuroprotective, and other activities.

There are days I wonder if there actually are any plants which AREN'T natural medicine or part of Mother Gaia's pharmacopoeia. Whether we unknowingly ingest isolates from this genus in our natural supplements, or simply feel uplifted, recharged and better for having enjoyed Her, it matters not. She and her extended family contribute to the magic of our natural world, and I am grateful.

Blissed & blessed in our Thai natural world - enjoying to share the magic and the natural beauty.

Interesting... 🤔

I couldn’t find any reference to this species at all in the usual TCM materia medica.... now my curiosity is piqued.

I think you are absolutely right here and this goes perfectly with Paracelsus saying: "The dose makes the poison"

Now does that "dose makes the poison" go for your incredible sandwiches too? LOL....

hahaha... for sure! this winter alone with these sandwiches I took 10 pounds easy... ;) :D

What a stunning flower! This is amazing!

Wow .what a beautiful plant!!! What a stunner!!! So many beautiful healing plants in the world, without doubt! And Thailand seems to have the super pretty ones! Thanks for posting.

What a fun thought! I've actually wondered the same myself. It seems everything is either beneficial or poisonous, and I suppose poisons are still medicines, as all medicines kill something, right? Nothing is neutral, and it all has a purpose, that's one of the wonders of creation for me.

WONDER. Such an under-used word. But really the only appropriate one for Mother Gaia & her astounding diversity. 💚🌿

It is wonderful to know about this plant and it looks so attractive also. As you say Mother Earth provides us with all the remedies that we would need for a healthy living. I wish the Pharmaceutical Industry would focus on plant based medicines and produce some genuine medicines that would make difference to people health in a positive manner
