Sandoitchi: A $75 Sandwich
And No!! I haven't tried it! I refused to pay $75 for a Sandwich out of a food truck, but even worse, I hate to stand behind a line consists of 200 people waiting for it. Also not all the Sandwiches are $75... Thank Heavens for that!
There is no fixed menu, but what I gather from Chron.com...
Cold Sandwiches = $9... egg with strawberry (don't ask!)
Hot Sandwiches = $12... chicken and pork katsu
and he iconic A5 Hokkaido wagyu beef sandwiches with (edible) GOLD leaf (yeah, that's right!) = $75
So here I am, going for an evening walk to Rice Village area in Houston. All I was planning was a little walk with the kids and may be some window shopping at the neighborhood toy store. As I near the Torchy Tacos in Rice Village, I see something very strange. This is Saturday evening at around 5:30 pm, and I see a massive line in front of Torchy's. I thought, that's can't be. I mean Torchy is popular, but there is no way anyone is standing in 200 people line for Torchy's. So I ask people standing in the line. They said its for Sandoitchi! And they added, didn't you know?!
Obviously, I didn't. I didn't have a clue that its a good truck either!
Well I did what I normally do in cases like this. I googled. I find out that it is a Dallas based shop. They were opening up just before the onset of the Virus, and now they do it like a mobile food truck, and they are visiting Houston! Aparently they are the talk of the town as per our local newspaper. I clearly live under a rock, which is not a surprise for me. But reading that piece above it says aparently Saturday night was the last night for them in town. That explains the crowd I guess. I was so surprise at this, especially because my neighborhood people is not known to be 'hype crowd'... they are the opposite. So this seems surprising to me. So I climb up the parking lot above and took that picture with my phone camera.
Well, I didn't get a change to taste it. Here is the famous wagyu beef sandwich, if you look carefully you can see the gold leaf! The reciepe is described in the source. I am not sure if I will try it, but more I read about it I want to try it. I will see if they are sticking around or gone for good!
