Power Outage Number 2

Second Snow, Second Power Outage

Last night as we were heading to bed it was raining, temperatures were in the mid 40 degree Fahrenheit range. Sometime between 2:30 AM and 4:30 AM it shifted over to snow.

It continued to snow til about 3:00 PM. It was one of those very heavy water laden snowfalls that as soon as you step in the snow your step turns it to water/slush.

I imagine it was not a safe time to be on the roads, the melt/freeze condition is never safe to drive in. Like last weeks power outage we were just again thinking of our second morning coffee and breakfast.

No such luck, at least the eggs were not cracked, nor the coffee halfway through. Just before the start of our breakfast routine, the power went out. That is the second time so far this year.

Fortunately it was not out for long, and the generator was all prepped to start, (except I forgot to top the gas tank), so all was pretty much sort of okay. Unlike last power outage which was mostly tree related this one may have been a combination of cars hitting poles, or heavy snow falling off and tripping breakers.

There might have been some tree activity involved, but most likely cause of outage, unsafe driving conditions. People do not have their winter driving built up yet.

So what to do during a power outage? At least this one was only for about two and a half hours. So not wanting to be added to the possible car crash count, we stayed home, fired up the generator so my wife could stay warm and surf the net.

I decided it would be a good time to re-acquire my Granny Square making skills. It has been awhile since I picked up my crochet hook and yarn.

Results...yeah I needed to re-learn:

A few things I had forgotten:

  1. It is three chains in the corner, not two as I used.
  2. The step up from row 3 to 4 is different than the step up from row 4 to row 5.
  3. You need to repeat the odd even step up for any other rows you make.

The above butchered square was done during the power outage. It took me about 45 minutes to do. One thing I was kind of happy about is my yarn tension was pretty consistent, not to tight of stitches, nor to loose, so even though I lost the full memory of how to construct a nice square, at least my fingers still were able to keep a nice tension.

The power came back on shortly after I finished my butchered square, so instead of going to my books I just did a quick Granny Square lesson search.

Here are the results:

The little bump up at the top is where I tied the yarn off, that will disappear when I get around to tucking in the tail strands.

Well our power seems to still be a little bit iffy, at least we got our chili re-heated and ate before the power blipped and turned off my heater and my computer, I guess it was not a long enough or strong enough hit to turn off my TV screen. Fortunately peakd saves drafts, and even though at times I don't like chrome, it at least restored my open tabs.

I don't think I will press my luck to much, so that concludes this little post of Power Outage. It has been awhile since I visited needleworkmonday, I know it's not Monday, but it is needle work of a sort, very basic and beginerish but it is nice to have a place to post such things, so thank you all.

This looks so cute and lovely thanks for sharing @bashadow

Thank you, it is one thing that does not need power, and is good at passing the time during a power outage.

Sent 100 HKLBRE Huckleberrie.
Put them on the market for 1.10

Done - on the Market.

We are looking at a Generac install here in the near future. I have 2 of the Spanish style generators. (El-Man-Uel) And a third APU (aux power unit) on the big truck.

Typed in Generator on giphy and got this? WTF..?

But it would be nice to have the auto, hands free, keep on knitting style Genny...

If we move again, (which we may or may not do), we will get one built in and auto start when the power goes out. This getting gas, filling the tank, and trying to start a portable generators is for the younger crowd, not the older crowd like me.
