many, many others. Mate is a fork of the traditional GNOME 2 desktop, which is quite a few years old now, but, GNOME 2, that is. Mate is definitely a desktop environment that provides a classic and familiar desktop experience, combined with simplicity, stability, usability, and a modern look and feel on some distributions. I'll explain that comment in a moment. Mate is known for its lightweight nature, making it suitable for older hardware. Each distribution that provides Mate has tweaked it in some unique ways. The most extensive tweaking is provided in Ubuntu Mate, which provides panel layouts in addition to its default layout, name familiar, all built on the Mate desktop, each emulating a different desktop environment and selectable without rebooting.
