Hello everyone! How are you? Today I want to tell you about my latest acquisition. Some of you may already know this (from reading my other posts), but I'm a huge fan of Benjamin Lacombe's work as an illustrator, so I've set myself the goal of collecting all the books he's illustrated, although I'll have to do it little by little because they're expensive. This time I got Carmen, a story I only knew before from the opera and ballet, and frankly, I didn't know there was a book version. When I read it, I absolutely loved it.
¡Hola hola gente de internet! ¿Cómo están? Hoy quiero hablarles de mi más reciente adquisición, algunos de ustedes quizá lo sepan (al haber leído mis otras publicaciones) pero soy gran fan del trabajo de Benjamin Lacombe como ilustrador, así que me he propuesto como meta coleccionar todos los libros ilustrados por él, aunque tendré que hacerlo poco a poco porque son costosos. En esta ocasión conseguí Carmen, una historia que y solo conocía antes por la opera y el ballet y francamente no sabía que había un libro, y cuando lo leí de verdad me encantó.
The story features a narrator who is also a character in the narrative: an archaeologist. He meets Don José, a tormented and persecuted man, and also the story's protagonist, Carmen, a beautiful gypsy woman for whom Don José is completely infatuated. His obsession is so intense that he abandons his military career and even engages in illegal activities, dealing with smugglers and other criminals. Carmen, however, cannot bear Don José's attempts to possess her, because she, like all gypsies, cherishes her freedom. But this indomitable spirit and Don José's unhealthy passion are the perfect recipe for drama and catastrophe.
La historia cuenta con un narrador que también está presente como un personaje más en la historia, se trata de un arqueólogo, él conoce a Don José que es un hombre perseguido y atormentado, y también conoce a la protagonista de esta historia, Carmen, una gitana de gran belleza por la cuál Don José está completamente loco y obsesionado, de hecho es tanta su obsesión por ella que él deja su vida como militar e incluso llega a cometer actos ilegales haciendo negocios con contrabandistas y otros delincuentes, pero Carmen no soporta que Don José intente poseerla, porque ella, al igual que todos los gitanos, ama demasiado su libertad, pero ese espíritu indomable y la pasión enfermiza de Don José son el coctel perfecto para el drama y la hecatombe
I loved this novel because it challenged the archetype of 19th-century female characters, usually associated with submission, subtlety, and fragility. Carmen, on the other hand, besides being a very beautiful woman, is independent and shrewd. She is aware of her beauty and uses it to seduce, which is why she is so dangerous. I would dare say that she is a Femme Fatale, or fatal woman as they are also called. In turn, she reminds me of Kitri, that female character from the ballet "Don Quixote."
Me encantó esta novela porque desafió el arquetipo de personajes femeninos del siglo XIX, usualmente asociados a la sumisión, a la sutileza y a la fragilidad, Carmen en cambio además de ser una mujer muy hermosa es independiente y sagaz, es consciente de su belleza y se vale de ella para seducir por eso es tan peligrosa, me atrevería a decir que es una Femme Fatale, o mujer fatal como también la llaman, a su vez me hace recordar a Kitri, ese personaje femenino del ballet "El Quijote"
But on the other hand, we have the danger of an obsessive passion, often confused with love, which leads to romanticizing aggressive or excessively macho behaviors that were totally normalized in the 19th century, but even so, Carmen already sensed that this would be Don José's downfall and that's why she tried to warn him.
Pero por otro lado tenemos el peligro que representa una pasión obsesiva, a menudo confundida con amor, lo cuál lleva a romantizar conductas agresivas o excesivamente machistas que estaban totalmente normalizadas en el siglo XIX, pero aún así Carmen ya intuí que esto sería la perdición de Don José y por eso intentó advertirlo.
On the other hand, the book is full of many Andalusian icons that help us learn a little more about its culture, and Benjamin Lacombe's illustrations undoubtedly helped to set the scene for the novel very well, with his somewhat gothic style and the melancholic features of the characters; I simply loved it.
Por otra parte el libro está cargado de muchos íconos andaluces que nos ayudan a conocer un poco más de su cultura, además las ilustraciones de Benjamin Lacombe sin lugar a duda ayudaron ambientar muy bien la novela, con su estilo medio gótico y las facciones melancólicas de los personajes, simplemente lo amé.
