One thing that I have found interesting is the fact that the ratings for some sports have plummeted. Whether this is from the pandemic, or social issues this ultimately means less money for the cable advertisement. In some cases like the NBA finals you had viewership down 50%, advertisers have to not be happy with those numbers. We spend a little money on advertisements, but we review the profitability every quarter on the effectiveness of our dollars. Ultimately if the leagues get less revenue the players might see a reduction in the salary caps. That is when all the fun will start, possibly leading to lockouts and such.

Something related happening in French football ligue 1. A newly created channel bought TV rights for a crazy amount of money before COVID. They realised they don’t want to pay anymore and just escaped from the contract they didn’t fully paid. Most impacted being the customers who paid a full year subscription to the service :(
