Heat wave

The scorching sun welcomes me when I step outside. Its rays are like incandescent spears that pierce my skin. The asphalt of the pavement gives off a suffocating heat that hits me like a slap in the face.

It's the beginning of another heat wave that will mercilessly hit the city over the next few days, caused by the insane habit of cutting down trees and not planting new ones.

I trudge on, feeling the sweat soak through my clothes almost instantly. Drops of salt trickle down my forehead and back, soaking my shirt. The air is a dense, unbreathable mass, as if I'm walking inside an oven, my lungs fatiguing with every breath I take.

The pavements are practically deserted under this blazing sun. Only the odd fool like me dares to brave the crushing heat. The cars look like ovens on wheels, spewing fiery mist from their exhausts, not a single cloud breaks the brutally flawless blue vault of the sky.

In the busy streets there is no shelter. Concrete and asphalt accumulate and expel the heat in a maddening way. I escape to a small, sparsely wooded square, but not even the cool shade of the branches manages to alleviate this torrid suffocation. I desperately search for an oasis, a park with fountains, but there is no respite.

The city is an infernal oven that does not boast of solutions to lessen the thermal sensation but multiplies it with its constructions that break the possibility of any breeze coming from the surroundings.
