Isn't it strange how one single event can change the entire course of a person's life? Sometimes we make some choices and we see the effect of the decision we just made.
When the effect is positive we automatically assume if we hadn’t made a particular choice it would not have ended well. However, what if the other choice we didn’t pick would have had better results (I guess we’ll never know).
On the other hand, if the choice we made has a negative effect we also assume the other choice would have been way better. Is this always true? I can’t answer that. But one thing is for sure, any decision we make takes our life into a different course every time.
Last night I was having a conversation with my mum and we were talking about the horrifying things youths from my state go through just to leave the country. In my country, youths from Edo state (my state) are fond of looking for any means to enter Libya – without a visa of course.
They go with ships, walk desserts and suffer different inhumane treatment just to get to Libya or Italy – for some reason they think the grass is automatically greener over there. Most of them who eventually make it there end up doing prostitution (for the ladies) and the men do the worst jobs.
The worst part is most of them do not make it there. They either die in the sea or the desert. Some months ago I saw a video of some of them who died in the sea, over 50 lives lost.
Now would their lives have been better if they stayed back in the country - I do not know. Would they have embarked on the journey if they knew they’d die like that – probably not? Would some of them regret making that choice – maybe. Did they know the consequence of the action they were about to take – maybe (the higher the risk the higher the reward right?).
However, those of us who seemingly make less risky decisions still suffer from some negative effects of that decision and they affect our entire being and change the course of our lives. Even those with positive effects still have the power to change the course of our life.
We sometimes fail to see the changes until we sit back and reflect. At the end of the day, we are left to wonder if it was meant to happen or it was just a mere coincidence.
