Hello HIVEs!
Last week I described here how difficult it is to find an unlit beach on Florianópolis, an island in the state of Santa Catarina (Brazil).

At the very end of the small fishing village of Armação on a rocky headland called Ponta das Campanhas, a spotlight didn't seem to be working. This was my chance to get a light painting in the box after all.
Letzte Woche hatte ich an dieser Stelle beschrieben, wie schwer es ist auf Florianópolis, einer Insel im Staat Santa Catarina (Brasilien), einen unbeleuchteten Strand zu finden.

Ganz am Ende des kleinen Fischerdorfes Armação auf einer felsige Landzunge namens Ponta das Campanhas schien ein Scheinwerfer nicht zu funktionieren. Dies war meine Chance doch noch ein Lightpainting in den Kasten zu bekommen.

First I scouted out the photo spot in daylight to get an overview and develop ideas.
My primary image idea for this evening was to reveal glowing lava under the rocks. To depict the elemental forces on earth that created this landscape.
Zuerst kundschaftete ich den Fotospot bei Tageslicht aus um mir einen Überblick zu verschaffen und Ideen zu entwickeln.
Meine primäre Bildidee für diesen Abend war es unter den Felsen glühende Lava zum Vorschein bringen. Um die Urgewalten auf der Erde darzustellen, die diese Landschaft geschaffen haben.
Elemental Force
The rocky landscape was jagged by the waves and offered many attractive perspectives. Unfortunately, light smog from the beach Praia Lomba do Sabão, which is about 5 kilometres away on the opposite side, also played a major role here. However, a flat camera position in front of the rocks made light painting possible. In this way, the lights disappeared behind the rocks and only illuminated the sky.
However, it took a few attempts to light the scene appropriately.
In the following picture, only the crevices were illuminated with a LightPainter - Ryu's Lightworks - torch with an orange colour filter.
Die felsige Landschaft war durch die Wellen zerklüftet und bot viele reizvolle Perspektiven. Leider spielte auch hier Lichtsmog vom ca. 5km entfernen, gegenüberliegenden Strand Praia Lomba do Sabão eine große Rolle. Eine flache Kameraposition vor den Felsen erlaubte jedoch ein Lightpainting. Auf diese Weise verschwanden die Lichter hinter den Felsen und beleuchteten nur den Himmel.
Es bedurfte jedoch einiger Versuche, um die Szene passend auszuleuchten.
Auf dem folgenden Bild wurden nur die Felsspalten mit einer LightPainter – Ryu’s Lightworks - Taschenlampe mit orangenen Farbfilter beleuchtet.

In the picture above, the edges of the rocks remained dark. So I also illuminated the edge of the rock with the torch. As you can see in the following picture, there was nothing to the right of the rock that could reflect the light. So the right part of the picture remained dark.
Im Bild oben blieben die Ränder der Felsen dunkel. Also beleuchtete ich mit der Taschenlampe auch den Felsrand. Wie im folgenden Bild zu sehen, gab es rechts vom Felsen nichts, was das Licht reflektieren könnte. Der rechte Bildteil blieb also dunkel.

Something brighter was needed!
On the right-hand side, I used a NOCTIGON DM11 and an orange colour filter to throw some light onto the rocks further away. This is how the cover picture was created. Unfortunately, the left side of the rock had received a little more light than the right. I therefore repeated the whole process and adjusted the duration of the light on the edges of the rock. I was finally satisfied with the following picture.
Es musste etwas helleres ran!
Auf der rechten Seite warf ich etwas Licht mit Hilfe einer NOCTIGON DM11 und orangenen Farbfilter an die weiter entfernt stehenden Felsen. So entstand das Titelbild. Leider hatte dort die linke Seite des Felsens etwas mehr Licht bekommen als die rechte. Deshalb wiederholte ich das ganze noch einmal und passte die Dauer, mit der ich auf die Felsränder leuchtete, an. Mit dem folgenden Bild war ich schließlich zufrieden.

Serie SAFE!
On the way back, with my camera already in my backpack, a small group of rocks appeared in the cone of light from the torch. It made me curious. I hadn't noticed the formation in daylight. So I set up the camera again. I was able to walk round the rocks without getting wet. It was perfect for my SAFE! series. I had taken my DIY tool described in the last article, consisting of a torch, silicone cord and broomstick, with me that evening as a precaution.
Auf dem Rückweg, die Kamera hatte ich schon im Rucksack, erschien im Lichtkegel der Taschenlampe eine kleine Felsgruppe. Es machte mich neugierig. Bei Tageslicht war mir die Formation so nicht aufgefallen. Also baute ich die Kamera wieder auf. Die Felsen konnte ich trockenen Fußes umrunden. Das war wie geschaffen für meine SAFE!-Serie. Mein im letzten Artikel beschriebenes DIY-Tool, bestehend aus Taschenlampe, Silikonschnur und Besenstiel, hatte ich vorsichtshalber an diesem Abend mitgenommen.

Firstly, I aligned the camera and started it up. Then I exposed the rock from the left side with a NOCTIGON DM11. This could look quite exciting, I thought to myself.
Zunächst richtete ich die Kamera aus und Starte sie. Dann belichtete ich den Felsen mit einer NOCTIGON DM11 von der linken Seite. Das kann ganz spannend aussehen dachte ich mir.

Then I tried to create a veil around the rock with the help of my DIY tool. Here, too, I used the NOCTIGON DM11 to cast some light onto the rocks from the left-hand side. As you can see in the picture above, the reflection in the puddle of water in front of the rock unfortunately didn't really come into its own and the foreground looks quite dark.
In the final picture below I used the LightPainter - Ryu's Lightworks - torch with an orange colour filter again. I threw the light onto the puddle in front of the rock as well as onto the rock itself with this lamp. I was satisfied with this result, packed my equipment into my rucksack and hiked the 1.5 kilometres back to our beach hut. It was a lovely evening!
Dann probierte ich einen Schleier mit Hilfe meines DIY-Tools um den Felsen zu legen. Auch hier warf ich von der linken Seite mit der NOCTIGON DM11 etwas licht auf die Felsen. Wie im Bild oben zu sehen kam die Spiegelung in der Wasserpfütze vor dem Felsen leider nicht richtig zur Geltung und der Vordergrund wirkt ziemlich dunkel.
Im finalen Bild unten setzte ich wieder die LightPainter - Ryu’s Lightworks - Taschenlampe mit orangenen Farbfilter ein. Sowohl auf die Pfütze vor dem Felsen, als auch auf die Felsen selbst warf ich das Licht mit dieser Lampe. Mit diesem Ergebnis gab ich mich zufrieden, packte meine Ausrüstung in den Rucksack und wanderte die 1,5km zurück in unsere Strandhütte. Ein schöner Abend war's!

What Is Light Painting?
Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.
Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.

Aber warum sind denn die Strände im Nirgendwo alle beleuchtet? Aus Sicherheitsgründen?
Danke! Ich glaube, die Brasilianer wissen nicht wohin mit ihrem vielen Strom. Deshalb wird alles beleuchtet. 🤷 Das viele Licht ist wirklich ein Problem beim Lightpainting.
