Caterpillar with white barbed hooks - Oruga con ganchos de púas blancas.

in Fascinating Insects3 years ago
Butterflies and moths have a larval stage (caterpillar) that in most species consumes live plant tissues. Some caterpillars that are primarily leaf-chewing herbivores will also cannibalize conspecific (belonging to the same species) egg masses and larvae if available.

Caterpillars may possess various shapes, sizes and colors; also spines and barbed hooks, that is, stinging hairs. Sometimes these are for show and quite harmless, but sometimes not.

A wide variety of caterpillars (also butterflies and moths) can cause lepidopterism (a variety of cutaneous and systemic reactions that result from contact). Hairs embedded in the cocoons can also cause disease. The hairs embed in the skin and cornea, where toxin-mediated reactions may be mediated by kinins, histamine, and plasminogen activators.

I photographed the caterpillar species on a soursop (Annona muricata) tree. It is similar to the caterpillar of Lophocampa caryae, but it is not that species.

Fantastic photography showing this caterpillar, red depicts danger immediately, most definitely never touch any since there are a wide variety that can leave you with nasty skin irritations.
