My (parents') Quarantine Life

I have not personally been locked down because of COVID-19's rapid spread throughout the United States. I live in Utah County, Utah, which has only advised people to stay at home. Schools were closed, but most businesses are still open and I don't honestly see that much of a decrease in people out and about. I am sure it is coming.

My parents on the other hand both went through a 14 day self-quarantine at home in Haines, Alaska. My folks had spent a week in Hawaii before traveling to New Zealand to spend time with my oldest sister, and flew back through Seattle right when it was becoming clear that the outbreak was on for real in the states. My parents took this seriously, my dad is 77 with some underlying conditions and my mom is 70. There is no hospital or intensive care facility in Haines, and depending on the weather there is not even a way to transport someone out of town often for many days at a time. Usually there is a ferry system that connects the towns of Southeast Alaska, but years of under-funding has culminated in the remaining few ferries all requiring dry dock repairs at the same time this winter and there is no ferry service.

Knowing they might well have been exposed during travels, and knowing how devastating COVID-19 could be to their circle of elderly friends in small town Alaska, my parents didn't leave the house for 14 days. My brother and another sister live in the same town, and left them groceries on the porch. My niece Delilah is three years old and did not understand why she had to talk to grandma and grandpa through the window.

My parents are super cute so of course they devised fun ways to pass the time... like recording this video :) They wrote lyrics appropriate to their situation, set to the classic song "Our House" by Crosby, Stills & Nash.

I love the video, my dad carefully walking down the old creaking wooden stairs while my mom plays the baby grand piano and sings. I still think of that house as my house, I grew up there. I hope this song gives everyone else the same warm feels I got :)

Stay safe and use this opportunity to be creative if you can. Send fun videos to family and loved ones. Sing songs, make art.

I understand not everyone is so lucky to have food and shelter covered. I hope you all make it through this.

SONG LYRICS (by Dwight & Nancy Nash)
You light the fire, I’ll dust the flowers crumbling in their vase today.
Staring at the fire for hours and hours while we think of all
we used to do, for fifty years pre-you,
COVID NINETEEN, unseen.
Come to me now, and try to recall the last time someone knocked
and walked right in.
Such a cozy room. The windows remind us of the world outside
that tries to hide from, turn the tide on, you,
COVID NINETEEN unseen.
Our house is a very, very, very old house, with two cats in the sun,
Life used to be so fun, now ev’rything is diff’rent ‘cause of you
You light the fire, I’ll dust the flowers crumbling in their vase today.

Love - Carl

Aww this is so cute 😭

The crisis hit really hard in my country, so we've been a while on mandatory lockdown... I was selfquarantined a few weeks prior it was mandatory so I'm currently at my day 42nd, sigh. I wish I had a house in a village but my orchard is 20 minutes away by car and we're not allowed to go, not even to walk outdoors... hoping 26th on conditions are a bit less harsh so even keeping social distancing I can go maybe to Nature, I can go somewhere in solitude with Hector but well not allowed now. Hope everyone is safe... trying to be be creative with this time.

yikes 42 days :( That is a long time. Stay strong. Sending my love <3

We all comply, truely shit hit the fan in Spain pretty badly, we're topping Italy at the moment in infected and dead, it's true USA has more cases but also more territory, and we have tested poorly so we all known our figures are more. It has just been extended another two weeks, lockdown is complete (only Italy, China and Spain opted for this) , so going out to stretch and walk eve if you avoid everyone is not allowed. That's what I miss the most, just stretching my legs. I will have though to walk the 20th because though all my doctors have been done by phone I need to have some hospital tests, as I don't drive and only one person is allowed per car in case of needed use I'll have to walk my way there likely (no way I'm getting a cab) besides, creative, finishing things but not rendering as much as I'd love to... resting lots also, something that was long overdue. My country depends on tourism and economy blow is gonna be hard, on a personal level it's already been. So I think I'm going to get back to concerts online and hope people support them... still brainstorming things.
