Andra Day en una actuación para recordar
Of the nominees for Best Leading Actress in the last edition of the Oscars, the last one I saw was Andra Day in this film and in the midst of incredible performances, I believed (and believe) that she deserved not only the Golden Globe but also the Academy Award, which she did not obtain, but it's indisputable that this interpretation will go down in history.
De las nominadas a Mejor actriz principal en la pasada edición de los premios Oscar, la última que vi fue a Andra Day en esta película y en medio de increíbles actuaciones, creí (y creo) que era merecedora no sólo del Globo de Oro sino también del premio de la Academia, el cual no obtuvo, pero es indiscutible que esta interpretación quedará para la historia.
The United States vs. Billie Holiday tells the story of the legendary Billie Holiday (Andra Day), one of the greatest jazz performers of all time, who spent most of her career being adored by her fans around the globe and fighting the prevailing racism of society and her addiction to drugs. Although we see many stages of Billie's life, some of her childhood, her beginnings, rise and fall, the film focuses on the campaign that the United States Federal Department of Narcotics erected against her, using her addiction, so that she didn't continue singing a song that, in the opinion of the authorities, was seditious and threatened public order.
The United States vs. Billie Holiday cuenta la historia de la legendaria Billie Holiday (Andra Day), una de las mejores intérpretes de jazz de todos los tiempos, quien pasó la mayor parte de su carrera siendo adorada por sus fans alrededor del globo y luchando contra el racismo imperante de la sociedad y su adicción a las drogas. Andra Day not only plays in a great way a black, bisexual woman, addicted to heroin, who despite being famous is denigrated in the midst of a palpable climate of prevailing racism, but that woman is nothing more and nothing less than one of the most important and influential female voices in Jazz history. In order to sing like Billie, a pitch higher than hers, Andra exercised with a voice teacher, strained her throat, smoked, started drinking, talking louder, put down scarves and hot teas; in short, she mistreated her vocal cords looking for that scratchy tone that Billie had. That supreme acting commitment paid off and she gave us an anthology performance in her first film appearance (Andra is an experienced singer, but she's new as an actress).
Andra Day no sólo interpreta de gran manera a una mujer negra, bisexual, adicta a la heroína, que a pesar de ser famosa es denigrada en medio de un clima palpable de racismo imperante, sino que esa mujer es nada más y nada menos que una de las voces femeninas más importantes e influyentes en la historia del Jazz. Para cantar como Billie, un tono más alto que el de ella, Andra se ejercitaba con una profesora de canto, se hacía un nudo en la garganta, fumaba, se ponía a beber, a hablar más alto, se ponía bufandas y té caliente; en fin, maltrató sus cuerdas vocales buscando ese tono rasposo que tenía Billie. Ese supremo compromiso actoral dio sus frutos y nos ofreció una actuación de antología en su primera aparición en una película (Andra es una cantante experimentada, pero es nueva como actriz)
One of the most shocking elements of the story, skillfully expanded throughout the film, is the lyrics of the central song, composed and written by Abel Meeropol. It was one of the works of art that preached most strongly against lynching in the southern states of the United States (which were not illegal) and one of the first slogans of the American civil rights movement. The expression Strange Fruit was established as a symbol of the lynchings and refers to bodies hanging from trees. I must say is one of the strongest images a song can have.
Uno de los elementos más impactantes de la historia, hábilmente expandido a lo largo de la película, es la letra de la canción central, compuesta y escrita por Abel Meeropol. Fue una de las obras de arte que predicó con más fuerza contra los linchamientos en los estados del sur de los Estados Unidos (que no eran ilegales) y una de las primeras consignas del movimiento de derechos civiles estadounidense. La expresión Strange Fruit (Fruta Extraña) se estableció como símbolo de los linchamientos y se refiere a cuerpos colgados de árboles. Debo decir que es una de las imágenes más fuertes que puede tener una canción.
This story has sadness, pain, laughter, joys, injustice, anger, frustration, jealousy, betrayal, racism, violence, drugs, sex, there is everything in a mixture that is not enough to be memorable at the level of the best films of the year, but it does allow Andra Day to demonstrate all her acting and vocal quality. The best of The United States vs. Billie Holiday are the songs and interpretive force of a talented woman who did not play the famous Billie, but embodied her body and soul. Although I love Frances McDormand, I insist: I would have given Andra Day the Oscar, was the Academy wrong?
Esta historia tiene tristeza, dolor, risas, alegrías, injusticia, rabia, frustración, celos, traición, racismo, violencia, drogas, sexo, hay de todo en una mezcla que no alcanza a ser memorable al nivel de las mejores películas del año, pero sí le permite a Andra Day demostrar toda su calidad actoral y vocal. Lo mejor de The United States vs. Billie Holiday son las canciones y la fuerza interpretativa de una talentosa mujer que no interpretó a la famosa Billie, sino que la encarnó en cuerpo y alma. Aunque me encanta Frances McDormand, insisto: yo le hubiera dado el Oscar a Andra Day, ¿se equivocó la Academia?
The only good thing in this whole movie is the Andra Day's performance.
definitivamente Andra Day merecía el premio.
