Tokyo is a massive metropolis and as is the case with most cities, there are surely a lot of corruption and crimes going on all over the place. Most productions that gain popularity in the West are usually American, and when the story is based on real-life events, it is usually an American story. So seeing a Japanese real-life story being covered certainly added to my interest.
The main character is Jake Adelstein, played by Ansel Elgort, a young American who is living in Tokyo fully immersing himself in the Japanese culture, learning the language, and ultimately giving his best to have a successful career as a journalist in Japan.
The series' first episode has a first scene that takes place 2 years after the rest of the episode, and we can see the main character already having valuable contacts from the criminal world, and even doing a meeting with a very important gangster. Immediately after, we begin to see how his journey in Tokyo developed from the moment when he was looking to get admitted into a local newspaper.
This person is clearly passionate about everything regarding Japan and he is like a fish in the water when dealing with other Japanese people, he looks like a western person but it was as if his soul was Japanese. He is 100% committed to succeeding in this country and is willing to put in as much effort as possible in order to achieve his goal.
It was clear that with his attitude it was only a matter of time for him to achieve important results, he was more involved than his colleagues and it seemed to me he is the type of person who puts his heart and soul into everything he does. This doesn't mean he puts all of his time into his job, he also has a social life although it isn't super active.
Despite his efforts, he will have a hard time becoming proficient in his job, there will be a couple of challenging situations he will have to face, and his endurance will be put to test as he gets used to the local customs. This, however, was not enough to stop his journey in this country.
Tokio es una metrópolis masiva y, como es el caso con la mayoría de las ciudades, seguramente hay mucha corrupción y crímenes por todas partes. La mayoría de las producciones que ganan popularidad en Occidente suelen ser estadounidenses, y cuando la historia se basa en eventos de la vida real, generalmente es una historia estadounidense. Así que ver una historia de la vida real japonesa siendo cubierta ciertamente aumentó mi interés.
El personaje principal es Jake Adelstein, interpretado por Ansel Elgort, un joven estadounidense que vive en Tokio sumergiéndose completamente en la cultura japonesa, aprendiendo el idioma y, en última instancia, dando lo mejor de sí para tener una exitosa carrera como periodista en Japón.
El primer episodio de la serie tiene una primera escena que tiene lugar 2 años después del resto del episodio, y podemos ver al personaje principal ya teniendo valiosos contactos del mundo criminal, e incluso haciendo una reunión con un gángster muy importante. Inmediatamente después, comenzamos a ver cómo se desarrolló su aventura en Tokio desde el momento en que buscaba ser admitido en un periódico local.
Esta persona es claramente apasionada por todo lo relacionado con Japón y es como un pez en el agua cuando trata con otros japoneses, tiene el aspect de una persona occidental pero era como si su alma fuera japonesa. Está 100% comprometido con alcanzar el éxito en este país y está dispuesto a poner el mayor esfuerzo posible para lograr su objetivo.
Estaba claro que con su actitud era solo cuestión de tiempo para que lograra resultados importantes, estaba más involucrado que sus colegas y me parecía que es el tipo de persona que pone su corazón y alma en todo lo que hace. Esto no significa que dedique todo su tiempo a su trabajo, también tiene una vida social aunque no es súper activa.
A pesar de sus esfuerzos, tendrá dificultades para dominar su trabajo, habrá un par de situaciones desafiantes que tendrá que enfrentar y su resistencia se pondrá a prueba a medida que se acostumbre a las costumbres locales. Esto, sin embargo, no fue suficiente para detener su aventura en este país.
The Tokyo that is shown in this series doesn't look like a very clean place, and I mean both literally but also figuratively. The streets look dirty and more importantly, the population looks totally impure. It isn't like the city is as degenerated as Gotham in the Batman movie, but it clearly seems to be a place with a level of corruption and general bad vibes capable of swallowing many people and making them disappear forever. It doesn't look like a friendly place, that's for sure.
Corruption is limitless and it gave me the impression the majority of the people with some type of influence or position of leadership ended up succumbing to the temptations of selling their soul to the devil and reaping the dirty rewards.
I mentioned this because Tokyo and many other important Asian cities have the real-life reputation of being extremely clean and organized places despite their population being active 24/7. In this case, Tokyo looks like a big but very defective metropolis, with its vices and ugly sides being very present on a daily basis.
Slowly the series introduces more information about how the criminal world of this city operates. There is a character whose job is to blackmail owners of small businesses and charge them for protection, or in other words, the criminal forces regular people to pay money to prevent worse things from happening to them. This person is able to operate without no one stopping him as if he owned the city, and normal people are unable to do anything about it. They are completely unprotected about this corrupt state of things and the Yakuza pretty much rule this city.
Soon enough, the main character will have first-hand contact with high-level corruption, and even though he gets a bit scared and intimidated, it allowed him to properly realize how this city handles itself, and how the lack of values seems to permeate everything and everyone. It was only a matter of time to see the main character risking his life in order to learn more about the hidden crimes that take place in this city on a daily basis.
His main goal with his job as a journalist is to get to know this city at a very deep level and understand it beyond its simple surface, he wants to learn about its intricacies see for himself the real color of Tokyo's soul. In order to achieve this, he will need to network with both Yakuza's members, which is how important Japenese gangsters are called, as well as police detectives who might or might not be corrupt.
El Tokio que se muestra en esta serie no parece un lugar muy limpio, y me refiero tanto literalmente como figurativamente. Las calles se ven sucias y, lo que es más importante, la población se ve totalmente impura. No es que la ciudad esté tan degenerada como Gotham en la película de Batman, pero claramente parece ser un lugar con un nivel de corrupción y malas vibras generales capaces de tragarse a muchas personas y hacerlas desaparecer para siempre. No parece un lugar amigable, eso es seguro.
La corrupción es ilimitada y me dio la impresión de que la mayoría de las personas con algún tipo de influencia o posición de liderazgo terminaron sucumbiendo a las tentaciones de vender su alma al diablo y cosechar las sucias recompensas.
Mencioné esto porque Tokio y muchas otras ciudades asiáticas importantes tienen la reputación en la vida real de ser lugares extremadamente limpios y organizados a pesar de que su población está activa las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana. En este caso, Tokio parece una metrópolis grande pero muy defectuosa, con sus vicios y lados feos muy presentes a diario.
Poco a poco la serie introduce más información sobre cómo funciona el mundo criminal de esta ciudad. Hay un personaje cuyo trabajo es chantajear a los dueños de pequeñas empresas y cobrarles por protección, o en otras palabras, el criminal obliga a la gente común a pagar dinero para evitar que les sucedan cosas peores. Esta persona puede operar sin que nadie lo detenga como si fuera dueño de la ciudad, y la gente normal no puede hacer nada al respecto. Están completamente desprotegidos por este estado corrupto de las cosas y los Yakuza prácticamente gobiernan esta ciudad.
Muy pronto, el personaje principal tendrá contacto de primera mano con la corrupción de alto nivel, y aunque se asusta e intimida un poco, le permitió darse cuenta adecuadamente de cómo se maneja esta ciudad y cómo la falta de valores parece impregnar todo y a todos. Era solo cuestión de tiempo ver al personaje principal arriesgando su vida para aprender más sobre los crímenes ocultos que tienen lugar en esta ciudad a diario.
Su principal objetivo con su trabajo como periodista es conocer esta ciudad a un nivel muy profundo y entenderla más allá de su simple superficie, quiere aprender sobre sus complejidades viendo por sí mismo el verdadero color del alma de Tokio. Para lograr esto, tendrá que establecer contactos tanto con los miembros de Yakuza, que es como se llama a los gángsters japeneses importantes, así como con los detectives de la policía que podrían o no ser corruptos.
With time, he ends up developing his own contacts and networks that will allow him to have access to important information, which will then allow him to become some type of broker of information between different parties.
However, the game he wants to play is extremely risky because one mistake could put him on a hit list. He is dealing with gangsters who have no problem killing people, as well as corrupt members of the law who can be capable of pretty much anything. He is always walking on a thin line, and is actually quite good at doing so.
Final thoughts
Tokyo Vice is one of the best crime series out there along with Ozarks and Better Call Saul. The fact its story is based on real-life events made it much more intriguing for me, but even if it was all fiction and the story was invented, the series would still be amazing at pretty much anything.
Something I didn't mentioned before is that despite the fact it is an HBO production, most of the dialogues are in Japanese which might be a bit annoying for some people if they aren't used to read subtitles but it also makes everything about the story much more authentic. All the events take place in Japan after all.

Reflexiones finales
Tokyo Vice es una de las mejores series de crímenes que existen ahorita junto con Ozarks y Better Call Saul. El hecho de que su historia se base en eventos de la vida real la hizo mucho más intrigante para mí, pero incluso si todo fuera ficción y la historia fuera inventada, la serie seguiría siendo bastante buena en todo.
Algo que no mencioné antes es que a pesar de que es una producción de HBO, la mayoría de los diálogos están en japonés, lo que puede ser un poco molesto para algunas personas si no están acostumbrados a leer subtítulos, pero también hace que todo sobre la historia sea mucho más auténtico. Todos los eventos tienen lugar en Japón después de todo.

Muy buena serie y esta confirmada una segunda temporada. El actor protagonista n se parece en nada al periodista real, pero es que necesitaban hacerlo mas guapos. Creo que el actor interpreta bien su personaje, pero mi favorito son los secundarios, especialmente Sato, el joven Yakuza que nos han dejado con ese final de temporada de infarto. Se me olvido hacer la review, quede satisfecho con la temporada y espero que mejoren en la próxima.
No sabía que ya estaba confirmada la temporada 2, a mí me dejo muy buen sabor de boca esta serie y la verdad es que sí me encantaría que continuase. Para mí es de las mejores del año en su género junto a Ozarks y Better Call Saul. HBO como siempre haciendo producciones de calidad, y por cierto, ya falta poco para que empiece a ver la de House of Dragon hahahah, la espera ha sido un poco larga 😅

Esta serie la vi a apenas salió y la verdad quedé fascinado con lo que vi. De por si todo lo que tiene que ver con la temática japonesa me llama la atención pero si hace le agregas una historia de poder entre las mafias de los Yakuzas es otra cosa. La ambientación, la fotografía, la crueldad y crudeza, para mi todo fu un 10.
De las mejores series que ha lanzado HBO este año, sin ninguna duda.

With time i have reached to the point that i take any journalism films, and I don't see them if they are not reality based ones, not because of some quality stuff or whatever, but because one way or another, real journalism is death... At least unless the people that say it don't wanna get themselves killed for it.
I happen to not have any particular interest in stories based on journalism, but if you really like that type of story you should with more reason give this series a watch. It was quite good and another HBO success.

HBO is really good on making these re-enact's of history, they proved it with Chernobyl and time will tell how it works in a few years :). About journalism, is that is mostly dead, modern journalism is more of people posting stuff WHEN it happens, than some expert digging out the truth, because those experts have more to gain by hiding it than to show it up, so things just go that way and it is kind of ... Bitter? Anoying? I dont know, big hug and see you in your next post :)
I guess that digging out deep truths can be problematic for many people, maybe this is why journalism is kind of dying? I don't really follow the topic of journalism too much, but I do realize we are surrounded by lies pretty much 24/7 and the best thing we can do is just to keep to ourselves and continue doing our own things.
