AI Use... Now and Then

in Silver Bloggers6 hours ago

I guess I should start by saying that any opinions I'm offering here should be taken with the consideration that I can only speak for myself and for the people I normally talk to, most of whom are writers, bloggers and fellow conscient creators.

Your mileage may vary!

We quite often discuss the issue of AI and how it is "potentially destroying" the field in which we work and whether or not there are appropriate uses for AI. Most writers (and visual artists) I know are somewhat anti-AI because they feel it constitutes some variety of "cheating." And they are afraid of being made redundant.

While I can certainly appreciate that particular perspective, I think it only holds true to the extent that you use AI as a substitute for your own creativity and then go on to label AI generated output as your own work, rather than being truthful about how you got to where you are, and what you are presenting.

That said, I think there are definitely some good and appropriate uses of AI in creative fields.

For example, one of my favorite online creators is an AI artist by name Kelly Boesch, who creates the most fantastical imagery and fantasyscapes using AI and sets it to what I guess we should call "AI assisted" musical scores and songs she... co-writes.

My reason for calling this particular type of work "an appropriate use" is that it is obviously not real, and it is obviously art in a sense, and it is far from what I would call "AI slop" in as much as it is quite sophisticated and well developed and her songs and musical creations — which, again, are AI assisted — have been impressive enough that she has now landed a record contract.

I'm not trying to label any of this as good, bad, or neutral, I'm simply saying this is an appropriate use of AI, at least from where I'm sitting. AI is adding some novelty/originality and by extension, value.

As I have alluded to in previous posts, I also think AI is a great tool to use for medical diagnostics as an adjunct to a physician's knowledge and insight.

Not because I believe that AI can, or should, replace doctors, but because AI has instant access to millions and millions of case files and white papers and can summarize findings when provided with certain specific inputs about a patients that no doctor could hope to amass over a lifetime. Again the ultimate decision maker here is the doctor... but AI is the tool that vastly expands the potential scope of correctly diagnosing a patient with perhaps a difficult to identify condition.

Ultimately, I speculate that the biggest issue with AI may actually be humans and their proclivity for cheating, seeking shortcuts and seeking "money for nothing."

AI is mostly pretty neutral...

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great weekend!
