Sometimes I pause and ponder some of these strange or interesting experiences I've had in my life, and they come off sounding like they're straight out of fiction, rather than reality.
Today's writing suggestion for Day 3 of the HiveBloPoMo challenge has to do with today being "National Sandwich Day." I guess there really is such a thing. I don't actually know anything about this particular event, and at this point in the day I can also say that I'm not going to have a sandwich today!
That said, I can make the somewhat unusual claim that I have actually eaten a sandwich in the town of Sandwich, in the UK!
A Zen view
Yes, that's really a thing.
No, Really...
Okay, so back in my teens when I was at boarding school in the UK — and my parents were actually living in the south of Spain — one time they were in the UK for a family event when the school term ended for the summer, so they decided they would just pick me up in the car and we were then going to drive down to Spain for the summer.
Well, at that time there was no "Chunnel" so you had to take the ferry from Dover to Calais in France. Because we were driving from the English West country — which is a ways off — we had actually spent the night in the city of Canterbury. For reasons best known to my stepdad, he had booked a ferry reservation for early afternoon so on our way from the inn in Canterbury we cut straight across to the town of Sandwich and ended up eating a sandwich at a pub in Sandwich!
Then we went and got in line for the ferry and started our very long drive down through France and Spain to get to the south of Spain.
Of course, sandwiches have always been near and dear to me as a favorite food.
I grew up in Denmark where the entire country is famous for its open-faced sandwiches, and I have been fond of those all my life. I guess you just kind of stay with the stuff that you were raised with, particularly if you have a positive connection with it!
Sunset leaves
That's a LOT of food!
I still remember being somewhat surprised the first time I had a so-called sandwich after moving from Europe to start University in Austin, Texas.
I don't remember exactly which sandwich restaurant chain we went to, but I do remember just being amazed at this huge pile of food that was on the plate in front of me. I was especially amazed by the amount of meat that was stuffed into the sandwich which — around where I grew up — would have been enough to feed a family of four for a week!
Okay, so that's an exaggeration.
But as far as I was concerned it would definitely have made at least three or four sandwiches the way I make them.
The sad thing about that whole experience was that aforesaid "blimp" of a sandwich wasn't even very tasty...
More isn't necessarily always better!
