What are the implications of Google Deepmind Alphafold team winning protein folding contest?

in #stemq5 years ago

My question is based on this blog article from https://deepmind.com/blog/alphafold/ . The Google Deepmind Team have won the "Community Wide Experiment on the Critical Assessment of Techniques for Protein Structure Prediction" (CASP) protein folding contest. The contest is to find protein structure from amino acid sequence. The results as per this website seems great: http://predictioncenter.org/casp13/zscores_final.cgi?formula=assessors.

Snapshot from CASP website

Note the zscore of A7D team(Google's team code). It is 62.27
And see the second position score: 42.89! See the difference!

So my question is this:
What are the implications of Google Deepmind Alphafold team winning protein folding contest?

Will the protein-folding problem be solvable in near future?
