I like buying my Sunday meat joint from the high street butcher. I know it's more expensive but:
- I'm supporting local businesses.
- I like the experience.
Another reason is they let Charlie come into the shop, which he enjoys, but, funnily enough, he has little interest in raw meat (That dog's spoilt! He prefers cooked meat). I like having a laugh and a chat with the owner. I went through a period of asking him for meat I knew he would not have: "Got any venison?" apparently, he doesn't do Aardvark, and who knew toasted voles were not a thing? As usual, Charlie and I went in Saturday to buy a nice joint of beef.
Butcher: "This is the wife; she used to work here all the time, but the other woman you sometimes see is on holiday, so the wife is helping out for a bit."
Me: "Oh, hello there."
Butcher's Wife: "What a lovely dog."
Me: "Don't be fooled; that's how he sucks you in!"
The butcher gave his wife some chicken scraps to give to Charlie
Butcher's Wife: "Aww, look. Bless him. He's a lovely dog. Do you want to swap?"
Looking straight at the butcher.
Me: "WHAT? FOR HIM? Not bloody likely!"

Don't seem to be many independent butchers left. The one in the village went years ago. It's all my fault as the family were veggies. My son turned carnivore a while back.
Hopefully, the veg shop is still going?
