Thoughts and Influences on Street Photography | Monomad Challenge [ENG/ESP]

Over the years I have dedicated myself to explore different types of photography, I have done portraits, nature, long exposure, architecture and more, but reflecting on this I feel that street photography is what attracts me the most, I have gone through different styles and influences and I am always in a constant change and learning, so I do not have a defined style of photography 100%. There are many ways to capture the streets of a city or a town and I think that within street photography there are many styles, to put some term.

One of my strongest and most recent influences is the Chinese photographer Fan-Ho. I really love his work and I am drawn to the images he has captured, perhaps one of the many reasons is the fact that they were taken in the 50's and 60's, he is a master of chiaroscuro, incorporating elements such as shadows, light, subject and geometry.

Capturing the essence of the streets of Hong Kong and expressing them with great drama, he is considered one of the best photographers in the world. I think having him as an influence is a wonderful thing, don't you think? If you don't know about this photographer here is a little bit about this wonderful Fan-Ho artist.

Con el pasar de los años me he dedicado a explorar distintos tipos de fotografías, he hecho retratos, naturaleza, larga exposición, arquitectura y más, pero reflexionando sobre esto siento que la fotografía de calle es lo que más me atrae, he transitado diversos estilos e influencias y siempre estoy en un constante cambio y aprendizaje, de manera que no tengo un estilo de fotografía definido al 100%. Hay muchas maneras de capturar las calles de una ciudad o un pueblo y pienso que dentro de la fotografía de calle hay muchos estilos, por poner algún término.

Una de mis más fuertes y recientes influencias es el fotógrafo chino Fan-Ho. Realmente amo su trabajo y me atrapan las imágenes que ha capturado, tal vez una de las muchas razones sea el hecho de que fueron tomadas en la década de los años 50' y 60', es un maestro del claroscuro, que incorporaba elementos como sombras, luz, sujeto y geometría.

Capturando la escencia de las calles de Hong Kong y expresandolas con mucho dramatismo, es considerado uno de los mejores fotógrafos del mundo. Pienso que tenerlo a él como una influencia es algo maravilloso, no creen? Si no conocen sobre éste fotógrafo acá les dejo una un poco sobre este maravilloso artista Fan-Ho.

The ways and methods that I currently apply to take street photography have changed a little, the number of shots has decreased and patience has increased, I find it more ideal to wait for unique moments that generate a lot of interest, where there is a connection, a story behind the image, an emotion. This is precisely what this photographer recommended when shooting street photography.

So my vision of capturing the streets, alleys, neighborhoods, markets and suburbs in the city has had changes and will be reflected in my future photographic works, to which I will dedicate the necessary time to have the desired results and that connect with the emotional and dramatic philosophy that comes with taking this type of photos.

One of the most exciting aspects for me is that I imagine everything in black and white and obviously the emotions and stories have a greater impact with the absence of colors. Would it be very arrogant of me to pretend to do street photography in the style of Fan-Ho? I don't know, but it would be a challenge to try 🙂

Las formas y métodos que aplico actualmente para hacer fotografía de calle han cambiado un poco, la cantidad de disparos han disminuido y la paciencia ha aumentado, me resulta más ideal esperar momentos únicos que generen mucho interés, dónde haya una conexión, una historia detrás de la imagen, una emoción. Precisamente esto es lo que recomendaba éste fotógrafo al momento de realizar fotografías de calle.

De manera que mi visión de capturar las calles, callejones, barrios, mercados y suburbios en la ciudad ha tenido cambios y se verá reflejado en mis futuros trabajos fotográficos, a los cuales dedicaré el tiempo necesario para poder tener los resultados deseados y que conecten con la filosofía emocional y dramática que conlleva hacer este tipo de fotos.

Uno de los aspectos más emocionantes para mí es que todo me lo imagino en blanco y negro y es que obviamente las emociones e historias tienen un mayor impacto con la ausencia de colores. ¿Sería muy prepotente de mi parte pretender hacer fotografías de calle al estilo de Fan-Ho? No lo sé, pero sería un reto intentarlo 🙂
