The husband grunted in response, certain that his wife would continue speaking regardless. And she did.
“The school is run by a pair of unrepentant sinners, the innkeeper is a drunk, the pastor secretly owns the tavern and I wouldn't even know any of this if the shop keeper weren't such a dedicated gossip!”
“Hmm.” He grunted again, listening even less than before if that were possible.
“But what's worse is apparently the forest is infested with nymphs!”
“Could you repeat that, please?” He said, doubling his daily word count in moments.
“Nymphs!” She blurted in a horrified whisper. “Scantily clad soulless creatures of the forest with female forms and no sense of decency. I shudder to think what could happen if you were to fall into their clutches- where are you going, husband? Didn't you hear me, DON'T GO INTO THAT FOREST!!”
“We need firewood!” He shouted over his shoulder as he ran for the trees.
I thought about adjusting the ending so that there aren't any nymphs and she was trying to lure him into some kind of trap but that felt a little too dark 😅.
