Two sculptures can be seen here which are supposed to represent the head of a sphinx and one is an unfinished work and the other a completed one and both of them probably came from a period between 600 - 500 BC where these were found on the Aegean Islands and the Temple of Aphaia. In ancient Greece, the Sphinx was also considered a kind of mixed being which consisted of a lion and human being and was predominantly always depicted in a female form and was also considered a mysterious being who had the ability to solve pretty much all puzzles and she loved to puzzle people and there is a legend that she would sit on a mountain near Thebes and put a mystery to the people who wanted to pass her and if they could not solve it, thy were strangled and therefore the sphinx was associated with destructive attributes and the king of Thebes Oedipus is known to have solved her mystery. The Sphinx is also known as the bearer of the secret knowledge which even knows the secrets of eternal life and also in ancient Egypt this behaves similarly where the Sphinx was considered as the guardian of wisdom and here she was mainly revered as the god of the underworld and it is assumed that the sphinx is different from ancient Greece of male origin and both are said to have originated independently of each other and are not connected. In ancient Greece, the Sphinx was also considered the daughter of the being Typhon and Echidna and it is assumed that in ancient Greece it was also linked to occult faiths and was considered there as a demonic being and ancient works of art in which the sphinx can be seen also arrived the Roman culture and often the sphinx can be found in old sculptures or as a motif on ceramics.
