Jesus was talking to the disciples on the night before he went to the cross. Jesus told them some things more than once as a way to emphasize it. He was telling them that God will provide them with what they need to do his will. It wasn't a blank check to satisfy their earthly desires for wealth and happiness. Nor is it that today.
(John 15:7-17 NIV) If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. {8} This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. {9} "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.
