RE: Make Memories, or Be Present?

You leave us with a lot to think about. I think of photos as "sparks of memories" because when I look at pictures from the past they evoke more memories from around that same timeframe. We recently spent a week and a half in the southwest and I took fewer pictures than I ever have and I think I enjoyed myself more. I remember asking myself, "Who am I taking these pictures for—myself or others on social media?" More often than not the answer was the latter and that's why I ended up taking so few.

Photos are sparks of memories, especially those photos of long ago. People we have lost, memories perhaps that have faded.

I like your question,"Who am I taking these pictures for..." That was in my head when I wrote this. It think social media has made photo taking perhaps a little toxic. No longer do we capture photos for ourselves, for our photo albums. We capture them for others. That takes away the uniquely personal nature of the picture. That truly does objectify experience.

Yes, leave that camera home sometimes. Take a picture in your head. For heavens sake, you're a writer :) If anyone has a head for vivid impressions, you do.
