Berserk is an epic story about a man named Guts and his constant struggles against the impossible odds and his inner demons. Guts is the most badass character ever as well as one of the best and deep written characters ever created. To say that this life is hard is massive understatement. And his life struggle is remarkable. Berserk happens in medieval fantasy world. You could say that it is a better version of game of thrones that doesn't turn into a pile of shit later. Berserk is not only my favorite manga of all time but also one my all time favorite works of fiction- along with Witcher, Lord of the rings and Song of ice and fire. The only flaw this manga has is that author died before he could finish his masterpiece. So it is possible that this story will never be completed. But despite that this manga is a true gem of art. Berserk anime made in 1997 is not as great as the manga. But it still is damn good anime.
One of the greatest strengths of this anime is an amazing soundtrack.
I also love the older style of animation used in this anime. But it also has a few flaws-it shows only part of the story, some very important characters and events are cut out or replaced. And anime ends on a biggest cliffhanger ever. So it would be best to consider this anime as a trailer for the superior version - manga. But I must warn you- you should not watch 2016 or 2017 versions. Animation in those two seasons becomes an abomination. So you should either watch 1997 and/ or 3 movies or just read manga while listening some OST of the anime.
