Minnow Tips: What to do after the fork if you are a small fish

The fork is here but all of the consequences are not yet known. Their is no doubt that the rich are getting richer and the rewards for smaller payouts are slashed. I will leave it to others to do the math and try not to worry too much.

I'm seeing a lot of happy posts as the big guys start using their exciting new down votes on spammers and the like. There seem to be some ways developing so we can sell our downvotes for the party. I will do that if I find a way that makes sense.

We have enough people seeking bad guys here. I will stick the supporting good smaller fish and stay on my path as best I can.

I am not seeing any posts about how the big fish will try to help their remaining redfish and minnows survive. I think we need to wait for the thrill of downvoting to become routine before they look up to see if we are still here.

My open posts all lost 20-25% on their rewards after the fork. Now I am waiting to see what happens in the next days.

Here is what I am doing to see if I can survive:

Curation

I have already been spending time trying to improve curation rewards for about the last two months. I had a project going on my @fitinfunfood blog and it worked. My curation rewards pretty much doubled on all three blogs from the efforts I took. I am going to revisit that project and post about it soon, but the basic ideas are:

  • vote more

I vote down to 70-80% now instead of 90% like I used to. This step alone increased my curation rewards dramatically. I am not sure how low you can go and still see good results.

  • vote smarter

Vote for posts that will get good votes after you vote. How can you find those? A lot of the dApps do manual curation of their tags. So a person posts today and gets a fat vote from the dApp tomorrow. This is not a foolproof plan, as not all posts get upvotes, but with practice you will know which ones are likely to be supported.

  • Learn from the winners

Follow the top 10-20 people on the "The Curation League / Rewards based" portion of the weekly The Curation and Engagement Leagues post by @abh12345. These are the people who are maximizing their curation rewards no matter their sp. Learn from their voting patterns and see if you can use similar strategies.

You can see my blogs on the bottom of this league now. I was not there before I started trying to improve so, WooHoo!

Curation Timing

You want to be voting at 4-6 minutes now instead of the 15 we were at. They changed the cut off to 5 minutes now. The sooner you change any auto-voting, the better for your rewards.

Posting Content

I'm still posting what I was posting. 2-4 posts a day on each of my 3 blogs. I do not have a reason to stop. Nothing else I can do will help me survive, and I have all kinds of content ready to go. I hope bigger votes will come in to make up for the fork effects and STEEM price.

Using dApps

I stopped posting with steemit almost a year ago and thank God for making that switch, I use dApps that pay in upvotes and suit my content. These are some of the most reliable and biggest votes I get. All of the dApps seem to be making changes to keep their people posting, so this is a bright spot at the moment.

Tribe Tags

I am tagging my posts with tribe tags now. This new aspect of STEEM is not something I am well versed on yet. But when I see new tokens in my wallet, I check out the tribe and use their tag if it fits. More to come on this huge topic.

That's it for now. If you want to help me keep posting on STEEM, here is some information:

Why should you help me? Why do I think I am worthy of help?

I am an asset to the STEEM blockchain. My constant effort goes to helping redfish and minnows grow here.

I work on three blogs, creating 40+ posts each week. The most important things I post are minnow tips to help others. Here is a post from a few weeks ago with a summary of many of those tips.

You CAN Succeed on STEEM

I am working on a new set of posts in light of all the new tribes and options for them. It is a whole now world of STEEM now that this has happened.

This is what I do on STEEM:

I post 2-4 posts on each blog each day, cycling through the noted dApps below.

@fitinfun

  • esteem - freewrite
  • busy - Minnow Tips
  • nTopaz - Photography

@fitinfunfood

  • esteem- food and ccc posts
  • tasteem - restaurant reviews
  • busy - how to posts about food

@bxlphabet

  • esteem - dApp and gaming reviews
  • dpoll- dApp, lifestyle, and STEEM questions
  • busy - daily holidays

How you can help me

  • Please send any amount of STEEM/SBD to @fitinfun so I can survive.

  • Please upvote any current posts on any or all of my blogs; especially the older ones.
    @fitinfunfood
    @bxlphabet
    @fitinfun

  • Please support any or all of my blogs in an ongoing manner with your auto-voting and following so I can continue on and not have to keep asking for help.
    @fitinfunfood
    @bxlphabet
    @fitinfun

  • Please send any amount of money to my new SE Asian Paypal account.

[email protected]

Send any amount of LTC to

  • If you can "only" vote some posts - It is enough.
  • If you can "only" send 1 STEEM - It is enough.
  • If you can "only" offer advice for how I can do better - It is enough.
  • If you can "only" offer encouragement and good wishes - It is enough.

Thank you so much for your attention,

The photo for this post is a taxi I passed on the way to the airport in Bangkok. I am going through my vehicle photography these days in preparation for a series to try on the new travelfeed dApp. For someone that does not drive, I sure take a lot of vehicle pics. I took this one with a Canon ELPH160 point and shoot camera.

I don't get how reducing the already meager rewards for everyone will convince people to keep on posting. I think this change will make this platform even more of a niche than it already is.

Some people will post as long as the place survives. People post for free on fb etc. And anyone new coming in will not have experience with the system before the fork assuming they get help to learn how to post.

I'm holding my opinion for a few weeks at least, @trincowski. I hope I can make it, but time will tell.

I will also keep on posting... but I don't know if I'll maintain the same quality standards.

"I am not seeing any posts about how the big fish will try to help their remaining redfish and minnows survive."

LOL when have they ever? This looks like the nail in the steemit coffin for me. To actually go and make it worse for the little guy is insane. Glad I sold my stake, I toyed with the idea of buying a little back this week since its so cheap, but now no way will I spend even one cent on this coin.

One thing has been proven over and over here, that people care about their own personal profit before what is good for the community. The witnesses are the worst offenders most of them own bidbots so a common sense change, like getting rid of paid votes will never happen. And we get changes that only benefit rich steemians like this. Good luck finding new investors

Well, I am lucky to have some bigger fish following me and voting my posts, and to know some others who I think do care even if they do not support me personally.

You are definitely best to leave if you feel so bad about the platform since the silver linings are a bit hard to see at the moment.

Thankfully, STEEM is not steemit. I am counting on the other users, devs, and creators on STEEM to make this place great and stopped using steemit about a year ago.

i felt way about chainbb but then they split, do we really want to depend on 3rd party Dapps? People keeping saying "steem isn't steemit" to excuse how shitty steemit is. The overwhelming majority of posts are still made on steemit, its the first thing new users see. It should as good if not better than all the other front ends, but it looks the same as the day I started. Steem, the coin, is forever linked to the wellbeing of steemit.com.

Oh wow. I did not know about chainbb. I did not use them, but did a dpoll about them and people liked then. That's a shame. I had a similar trauma when we lost share2steem. This is why I use more than one and do not have all my eggs in one dApp basket.

There is no way to count on steemit. I know what you are saying about their usage and rep, but I have been gladly watching their numbers sink as other dApps rise. It is an embarrassment in every way.

Whenever I work with new people here, I steer them away to paying dApps as fast as I can. As soon as someone uses the other front ends, they also leave steemit the majority of the time in my experience.

This is a blockchain with many dApps. Someone has to use them if they are to succeed. The big guys don't need to use them. So the little fish are the ones that do. I'm glad to be in that group. But I definitely understand wanting to give up.

Which dApps are the best to use?

I am using this opportunity to build up my stake in the tribes. I feel they will be a great way for smaller steem fish to make it. At least it allows for more ways to be involved. I think the dapps will save it hopefully. Trying to stick to the optimistic view as well! I have kinda stopped worrying about my position on steem and focusing on my stake in the tribes I am involved in.

Thank you, @thelogicaldude! I knew I was forgetting something in this post. The tribe tags are working for me too. I will edit this post right now.

I think if we are here and trying anywhere on this blockchain, worrying is not our best path. Full STEEM ahead :)

Dear @fitinfun

We have enough people seeking bad guys here. I will stick the supporting good smaller fish and stay on my path as best I can.

Good choice :)

I've been sharing similar worries and I still do.

I wonder how will this fork impact users behaviours. So far it seem that most people will be upvoting content which is already popular.

When I upvoted post with 0$ then my upvote was worth only 1,04SP and it used to be 1,7SP before the fork. However when I upvoted the highest post in trending page (100$) then my upvote increased reward by over 2 SP. So pretty much it doubled in strength.

So somehow pushing your content to trending page will bring some solid traffic.

ps. how's your visa situation?
ps.2. do you use telegram? I would like to DM you.

Upvoted already.

Piotr

No I am not on telegram - I have not figured that one out so far.

I'm good with the visa until Nov 8 now. I will go to Bangkok on Nov 4-12 for STEEMFest even if I cannot afford the conference fee. This is when I need to leave Malaysia again no matter what.

Yes, I am hearing we all need to get on trending now to succeed here. This is completely insane. 100% of people cannot be trending at the same time. Should my minnow tips be trending?

OR

We need to bot our way to $20 if we do not get that naturally. What the ever loving hell is that??? So dan and his troop can come in and kill the reward you just paid for? Little fish mostly do not have money for that anyway.

The behavior I see so far is very discouraging, but I hold my opinion for a few weeks. If the big guys would put even a tiny bit of attention to helping little fish that would be great. They sure can downvote! I wish that enthusiasm would go in the direction of people who have great content with 50 cent payouts. I see so many of those every day.

Praying for a price rise or other such miracle.

hi @fitinfun

Late thank you for your valuable comment @chekohler

Would you mind sharing with me what's your impression so far after latest forks? One week after hf21 and hf21 has been introduced?

Yours
Piotr

I just this minutes published a post on the topic, @crypto.piotr. In summary, I am thrilled for those of us who remain and sorry that a lot of good people left.

FYI - the dust threshold for votes to pay now is at least 5 cents. Do not vote comments for less than that and waste them. Much better to vote posts where you will do some good.

Here is my post about the fork:

Great advise, I always try to keep my upvote power between 85 and 95 but maybe thats something i need to change
