SteemMonsters Market concerns

in #steemmonsters7 years ago

i just wanna place and share with you some thoughts....
...i see the prices of the cards on the OFFICIAL market, drop down quite a bit...
...a booster-pack costs 2$ ...and that was the fair price the founders of SteemMonsters decided to introduce!!
...i will repeat myself... 2$....The fair price of a booster-pack...
....according to this they stated and all of us involved in SteemMonsters know, that in every pack you will get common cards and at least one rare....or... less likely one epic...or... least likely a legendary ...or.....when you hit the jackpot one gold foil card...

...i will not take into consideration the epics, legendaries and gold foil cards...if you get lucky you can hit one of these but most of the times you will get four common cards and one rare..that's it and i'm very happy with this!!!
...this being the case, enables me to make a calculation just to find out ...in a sort of way.... the price of the cards...
..what i'm about to say (in order to avoid misunderstandings) is not the rule,is not something i read somewhere or somebody told me...it is just what reasonable way of thinking means to me....
...therefore, 4 commons plus 1 rare in the pack ,gives us a ratio 4:1 on the 'value' of the cards...which means if the pack costs 2$ we have a value of 25 cents for each common and 1 dollar for the rare card...
....i think you can follow me, it is not nuclear science it's simple math...

...if you go to the Official Market section you will find out that (this very moment i'm writing this post) the price of the majority of commons is 3 cents and as for the rares is not exceeding 30 cents, actually it is 27 cents for the summoners and 8 cents for the monsters..

..so here come the questionS...
....if i am a new user and i'm about to built my deck why should i purchase a booster-pack which will cost me 2 dollars when at the same time i can buy the cards i want at a very low price (less than 1/4 of the booster-pack price)???...
...on the other hand if i am a big buyer of booster-packs,let's say i have bought 700 -800 booster-packs, what is the reason to make me sell these cards (which i have already paid for, quite a lot) for such reduced prices and not for the prices mentioned above???

...i agree that there are many answers a human mind can come up with like

  • demand and offer will determine the price on the market
  • i just wanna get rid of my cards,so i throw them at a low price what is your problem
  • this is the price level which i find fair to give my cards away because i've hit 5 gold foil dragons and i'm already in profit
...i will not say otherwise guys...i agree....everybody has its own opinion and i respect that..

...but in a game like SteemMonsters don't you think that there has to be a limit on the prices???...at least a limit down ...a rule... a solid base that will guarantee that 'this is the lowest price you can sell on the market'...
....when i say makret i mean the OFFICIAL SteemMonsters Market...i understand that there will be...let me correct myself...there IS a parallel black market in which players can trade cards without limitations...yes of course this is how the system works in everything...but when you buy or sell in the black market you take a risk to be scammed so it's up to you....
....i am talking about the OFFICIAL market and only that!!!
...everyday there is a non-stop buying and selling procedure in so many goods all around the world....there is an official price sheet for every one of them though...
.....yes you can hit a bargain at a very low price...yes you can find a devalued item...you can even steal something for god's sake, but this doesn't mean that there is not an official price for it...
..so what i'm proposing for is an official price sheet which will clarify that 'there is a lowest price limit for every game card' in the Official SteemMonsters Market...you will not be allowed to place a sell order below that limit...
...i think this adds value to the game ...on the contrary when everybody is allowed to make their own prices this will eventually steal value from the game...

...i don't know guys....this is just my thoughts and concerns shared with you....i'm not saying i'm right...probably the founders of the game have already been through this scenario and maybe there is a reason for letting prices free...

....don't forget....kickstarter has been realeased!!!....join the community...... ....i would be very happy though to read what are your thoughts about this and i would greatly appreciate if @o07 or @littlescribe could forward my concerns to a higher level ( @aggroed ,@yabapmatt ) so that we could get their aspect ...

..thank you for your patience reading this!!!

Like most people I'm also a beginner and my understanding of the game is still quite shallow but as someone who bought 100+ packs here are some of my thoughts.

....if i am a new user and i'm about to built my deck why should i purchase a booster-pack which will cost me 2 dollars when at the same time i can buy the cards i want at a very low price (less than 1/4 of the booster-pack price)???...

If your aim is to build a deck without burning much cash, I suggest buying from the market as you can save alot. In my case I like buying booster packs because of the fun I get from opening them.

...but in a game like SteemMonsters don't you think that there has to be a limit on the prices???...at least a limit down ...a rule... a solid base that will guarantee that 'this is the lowest price you can sell on the market'...

No limit in the prices is actually a good thing imho. Letting the seller's and buyer's decide there own transaction limit gives more liveliness to the market place.

There are, in fact, many markets for SteemMonsters, and more yet to come, and I wouldn't classify any of them as a "black market" as such. For example PeakMonsters is definitely not a "black market". Or maybe you meant the Mt Mox Monster Market on Discord? Again, not exactly a "black market" as such. You can also trade cards one-on-one via the "Gift" feature within the game (or from PeakMonsters). Is that what you're referring to as a "black market"? That feature is created and fully endorsed by the developers of the game, so again it isn't really a "black market". I'd love to know what you are referring to as this "black market" for SteemMonsters cards!

You may like to do a bit of research on the Free Market system, where "prices for goods and services are determined by the open market and by consumers". What you are talking about here is Price Fixing to "maintain the market conditions such that the price is maintained at a given level by controlling supply and demand". In most jurisdictions this is considered as unethical at least, and normally is also illegal. Sure, I think that is taking things a bit far for SteemMonsters, but I think that any suggestion of setting a uniform price for a single card in the game is going to receive some serious backlash from the community as a whole.

What you forgot to take into consideration is the gambling aspect. Buying a booster pack is similar to buying a pull ticket. The value the pack cost isn't the value inside. The value inside varies to negative ROI to very high ROI.

Right now is an unusual time for steem monsters. It's alpha, we can't even play it yet. I think there are some who enjoy opening packs and are only looking for gold foils and are happy to throw away common and rare cards. So the values are artificially low right now.

Once the game goes live, that's when the party starts. Hopefully, a lot of new players will arrive who have no cards at all. No expectation of price. If common cards are $0.05 or less, they'll sell out in an instant. Before you know it, common cards will start at $0.20 (or more) and go up from there.

Right now the monster market has unusually low prices, but at some point it will correct. By December, we're going to be shocked.
