Special forces

Elements of armed forces that undertake unconventional covert and overt operations such as counterterrorist, demolition, offensive raids, intelligence-gathering, reconnaissance and search and rescue missions by air, land, or sea during conflicts and in peacetime.

It's not always straightforward to define what special forces, in respect of the military, actually means as the role is so fluid to keep up with changing needs although, one thing is for certain...they're special people who do extraordinary things.

Speaking of special people makes me think of a very special little fellow called @mrbonkers, my nephew, and with his fifth birthday coming up soon I've been shopping around for something to send him.

His love of Lego is legendary so there was no doubt that I'd have to send some which I posted about here but I wanted to find a few other things to add to the parcel to maximise the weight I could send in it so I've been looking around...and that's when I found this. My only concern was if they would have his size, everything else about it was perfect, so I rifled through the rack and finally found what I was looking for.

Unsurprisingly, he loves trucks, cars, Lego, fire engines, police vehicles, helicopters, fighter jets, military stuff and guns...Yeah, he's pretty much the same I was when I was a kid am now, and this operators outfit is going to blow his mind!

It comes with dog tags, binoculars and a fake UHF radio plus a hat and, of course, the essential Australian flag. The radio will probably get removed as he has his own real UHF radio which I sent him last year (a set of two) so he doesn't need pretend radios and then all he'll have to add is a rifle...although my brother is going to line up a handgun and holster rig for him as well as the rifle. (Toy ones.)

There's also a compass (which works) and loads of pockets and pouches for him to carry the other stuff he'll need when on missions; snacks probably. The hat is cool also, however he took one of my 5.11 Tactical caps when he was here at Christmas and he rarely takes it off, so I assume he'll continue to wear that one.

I'm pretty excited about him getting it although it would be a lot better if I was there to give it to him. I'll see the unboxing by video chat though and that'll be cool. I know he will love this thing, and the Lego I send him also but I know he'd be happier to have me there; he's good like that, a really nice kid who shows how much he loves me.

I couldn't ask for a more special nephew, he's an extraordinary little kid and pretty special to me, and my only disappointment is the distance between us, which is vast, that prevents regular in-person contact.

Do you think this is a cool birthday present for him? What's the best you've ever received or given? Feel free to comment below, I'll respond.

I bet you were looking for adult sized costume too!!!

wish I had an uncle like you when I was a kid, all I got was socks

Lol...Nah of course not...

Maybe yes. 😀

The truth is I have all that stuff, the real stuff, so it was a good chance to get some for the lad. He loves all that sort of gear, takes after me and my brothers when we were that age. (Most boys are the same I guess.)

Socks...Not good! But fear not, if I find adult sized suits like this I'll send you one. 😀

Wow, this is cool and he will be excited to receive this in addition to everything you have planned as a present. I don't know if he has an interest in the military as well but this will definitely make him feel like a military dude.

Getting birthday gifts... I am not lucky with that as a child and now, I really appreciate everything that comes in on my birthday and it doesn't matter whether it is big or small.

The best birthday gift I have given is a bicycle to my younger sibling... The expression on his face that day was priceless, I knew he was saving up and I told myself that if his grades were better than the previous session he would get it and he did.

I don't know if he has an interest in the military

He does, that's partly my influence and partly his dad's. He's exposed to a lot of things and over time will find his niche.

I didn't get all that much for my birthdays as a kid, and what I did get was often second hand stuff. I didn't mind though, and looking back on it I feel fortunate to have grown up in an environment like that; I learned the value of things and how to look after them as replacement was unlikely. I assume you were the same.

Everything meant a lot to me since I don't get them often and it made me place so much value on things.

I still do that now, the past influenced the future. It's a good influence though.

Indeed, that past is a great teacher if the student listens.

A special nephew deserves a special gift, I'm sure he'll love the suit and the tools that come with it as well as the one he bequeathed, it's time to teach the witch how to use card reading, it's a shame you can't be physically present with them, but that child will never forget you for such a significant gift, I wish I had an uncle like you 😁

I wouldn't be surprised if he wants me to put on my own kit and play armies the next time he's down here...but I'm not sure when that will be and his suit might not fit him. He'll probably hit me up for the real thing. (Knowing me, I'll get it for him.) 😁

You really are an excellent guy you have all my respect. The good thing is that your nephew already shows interest in what he wants to achieve in life and he has a motivating uncle who supports him 💪

Thanks mate, my niece and nephew mean a lot to me and I'll do what I can for them to get them prepared for what the world will be like when they're adults. Along the way we'll have some fun too.

excellent as an adult everything changes life is getting harder, but it will be our character that drives us to get up when life itself brings us down, a character that develops as a child many times I think we learn behaviors or repeat them from adults who motivate us And when we say that when we grow up we want to be like them, that's why despite everything we are experiencing, our behavior always has to be an example because we don't know who is following in our footsteps, I hope your nephew has a happy birthday ☺️

I the best way to move forward in life as an adult is to gain the skills required, and develop them, when younger.

That is one hella cool present! He is going to be to the moon on that one for sure. Hell I know my kids would have been when they were little boys. My wife used to cut down my old stuff and sew it up for them to wear. They would love it. My youngest still wears some of my old stuff. You are one cool ass Uncle!

It's pretty good right? I never had stuff like this as a kid, we had to make up our own, but I'm happy to have found this and can hardly wait to see some pictures of him in it.

Playing armies was a thing when I was a kid and my nephew loves all military stuff, maybe my influence. It's rare though I've heard, it seems people prefer their kids to play vegan or dress up like the opposite sex. I don't get it.

I did't have stuff like that either. Yeah, we played army a lot when I was a kid too.

it seems people prefer their kids to play vegan or dress up like the opposite sex. I don't get it.

Holy shit...my coffee almost ended up on my screen....but yeah, I hear ya.

Lol...That was the point, to give you a laugh, but...the sad thing is, it's true.

Oh my gosh, that is TOO FREAKING COOL! Even I want one now lol. He's going to absolutely love it and while I know the distance sucks, he's going to appreciate the thought that went into it. I love the Aus flags too, that's pretty darn special. Can't wait to hear what he thinks of it 😁

I think we should all get one...although, I have my own already. I'm ready for when China arrive...I hope the rest of the country is too.

I reckon @mrbonkers is going to love this suit. I really wanted to find a fighter pilot one as he wants to be a fight pilot and loves all things war plane related but I couldn't find something I thought was worth the money. He'll have some fun with this though.

Woooowww I'm sure you'll love it! It's great, I love it..... I think in another life I was a cop or something, I've said this before, I do it all the time!

He's going to love it, what an amazing gift and when you see him at that very moment.... I'm already excited....

What good questions you asked... where do I start?

What better gifts have I given... from a distance sent by post, a special key ring, very special for someone who wasn't expecting anything and it wasn't his birthday. It was very touching to know when he received it.

In person... my brother is a fanatic of tools, grinders, drills... of those things, he loves them, although it is not usual to give that as a birthday present, I do it because I know he loves them. We are very close.

What better present have I received? The easel to paint pictures, I left the ones I had in Argentina, I had bought them with my work and at the same time I was giving painting classes with them, but I couldn't bring them with me. So my family surprised me with one that is much better than the ones I had. When I got excited I cried a lot, so that day... I cried too much.

You brought back fond memories, thank you Galen.

It's nice to give people things for no reason other than the enjoyment of giving someone you value something nice to show you care. Giving without the expectation of anything in return is the best form of giving. Also, tools are a good gift for a man...I like getting tools although I tend to buy my own as I know what I want.

I like the easel gift. Nice work by your family on that one.

I have my dad's easel, he was an excellent artist who made his living his whole life by being an artist. I kept his as something special, a memento, after he passed away in 2020, although I'm no good at art and won't use it. Maybe someday my niece or nephew may want it. Today marks the third anniversary of his funeral...time has flown by...and I miss my dad.

How sorry I am... three years already... time goes by too fast, but that memory will be with you, maybe you should use it, everything is art, because art comes from emotion and the soul.

Your father, wherever he is, surely sees with happiness what he has done, because he has done what he loved. I am sure of that.

A big hug!

Death is something I'm familiar with and accept, even if it was my own, but that doesn't mean I like it or don't miss those that pass away. Three years is a long time and this year was the nineteenth since my mum passed away, also cancer, but it only seems like a few. Time has a way of moving by rapidly, one of the reasons we need to be living our lives as best we can whilst we have them.

Because time is the most valuable thing we have.

It's been 21 years since my grandmother passed away, she was like my second mother and it seems like yesterday but at the same time how many things have changed and how much I have done, another life.

Let every minute of our life count. I'm not afraid of death, I know where I'm going, I've been shown it, but I do suffer when someone we love goes away.

One important thing, even if we don't see them... they are there. We just don't see them.

But where's the Ka-bar? If he's turning 5 he's old enough for a good blade I reckon. Lol, I got my first BB gun for my fifth birthday, probably my favorite birthday present that I didn't buy myself. My money's on he loves it, even without a pigsticker.

I have a beautiful drop point knife for him, one I had hand made in America for me, which I'll give him when the time is right, but for now he'll have to improvise. Eventually he'll get all my stuff though, and there will be no need to improvise or pretend any longer.

Back at Christmas I showed him the knife and his eyes went as big as saucers. Lol. If he lived here, he'd be a little more versed in guns, but that's difficult to do from 4,000km away. It'll happen though...a BB gun for your fifth, seems totally legit to me!

Thank you @steemflow, it's very appreciated as always.
