As we start the new year with new ambitious, new wishes, new hopes, and new journeys, we may also want to take a look at the previous year and see how we did. In this post I would like to take a look at Hive content rewards distribution for 2023. Hive network's economy is bigger than just content rewards. There are block producer rewards, there are Decentralize Hive Fund payments, HBD interest payments, Hive interest, and many layer two token distributions. Content rewards is one of Hive's unique features. Anybody can participate and benefit from content rewards, either as authors or curators.
In 2023 Hive blockchain distributed total of $6,344,255 in content rewards. This is significantly lower than previous years. In 2022 this number was $10,750,433. This may have to do with the lower price of Hive in 2023 compared to previous years. Still rewards are in millions. Out of $6,344,255 total content rewards, $2,564,835 were author rewards and $3,779,420 were curation rewards. Normally content rewards are split 50/50 between author and curation rewards. However there seems to be a big discrepancy here. It could be due to due burning Hive, beneficiaries, or maybe even downvotes. If you know the reason for the discrepancy feel free to share in the comments. There always was a discrepancy like this, but this ones seems bigger than usual.
Significant portion of content rewards are distributed through communities. Hive communities continue to play an important role not only in growing the network, building tools, but also distributing rewards, driving engagement, and encouraging participation. Hive Communities distributed total of $4,887,430 content rewards, of which $2,335,760 were author rewards and $2,551,670 were curation rewards.
While numbers are lower than previous years, I believe and hope 2024 will be a great year for crypto overall and Hive will reclaim its true value and continue to appreciate in value. This will result in value distributed on Hive to appreciate as well. Now let's take a look at value distribution numbers by communities in 2023.

If you have colected the data from the comments table my guess will be that beneficiaries are not included in the authors rewards. This year the stabilizer is getting a big share of the authors rewards, somewhere around 25% las time I checked, and that seems to be the difference in your data above.
Another note is that giving exact $$ value to authors and curators is a chalenge becouse curation is paid in HIVE (HP), while authors 50% HP, 50% HBD. Even if the rewards are instantly put in power down, the final numbers will be different.
On average in 2023 around 24M HIVE was distributed, out of that 10.8M went to curators, and 5.4M to aauthors. Aditionaly around 1.8M HBD was paid to authors, beneficiaries included. From this data, authors rewards are around 3.6M USD.

No, it doesn’t include that. It only represents payouts for posts and comments as author or curation rewards.

Wow what great information. Some of the communities I follow are well ranked for the amount of them (freewriters, hive nftgame latino, risingstargame, proofofbrain, pinmaple) congratulations to them. It seems a bit strange to me that some others, for example Sports Talk Social is so high if I remember correctly they didn't have curators (well I don't know how good was the beginning of the year for them). And also is sad to see so many communities with so much potential are at the bottom, I hope they find the direction they deserve.

Discrepancies between author and curation has to do with beneficiaries (including to @null and @hive.fund) that only apply to author rewards and the spread between the internal price feed and market price of HIVE/HBD. Downvotes reduces curation reward for all upvotes in the post.

Wow, LeoFinance is up top again. Splinterlands being 3rd looks like amazing but I wasn't expecting Pinmapple up in 2nd. I haven't really looked too much into that community but I have seen it around. It's nice to see the top communities being fairly active

The skew between author rewards and curation is in the wrong direction in my opinion and may well hold Hive back. Content creation and authors are the lifeblood of Hive and in my opinion should get a larger piece of the pie.
