Don Johnson is not a good actor

in #movies3 years ago

It's been quite a while since I have written about films or movies but something happened to me last night that really made me think.

I'm old enough that there was a time when Don Johnson was admire by just about every teenager and young boy in America. I presume a lot of the rest of the world as well. You see, there was this show called "Miami Vice" and Don Johnson's character of Sonny Crockett was basically the coolest person on planet earth.

He worked as an undercover cop, drove awesome supercars, hooked up with models, and was sporting a kick-ass white suit jacket all the time. I remember we were so enamored by this look that there was a kid that I was friends with in 5th grade that actually had a full on white suit that he wore to school. I'd like to say that we didn't make fun of him but we did. We also got him and his suit very dirty on the playground.

Anyway, back to Don Johnson.

It was so long ago that I was a fan of the original series and I was so young at the time that I don't really have any idea of Don Johnson was actually any good or had any acting skills whatsever. I am thinking that maybe he didn't because he didn't really go on to do much else after that except for playing supporting characters in movies that were normally scumbags.

Other than "Django" and "Tin Cup" I can't really even think of any movies that he has been in.

Well the other night i stumbled upon a British show called "Sick Note" and figured I'd give it a go because it was a 22 minute comedy series and this is about as much time as I am going to dedicate to a show when I am preparing to go to sleep.

The show itself is pretty decent but there is one thing that is absolutely terrible in every episode and that is Don Johnson's character.

I will admit that Don is looking pretty damn good when you consider that he is 72 years old and probably has done quite a few drugs in his lifetime. He also doesn't look like a lizard so I don't even think that he has had a bunch of plastic surgery either. Ah, one of the many benefits of being a man.

It's great being good-looking and all but there is one thing that time has not done for Don Johnson, he is an absolutely atrocious actor. In this series, he is probably the biggest name in the whole thing except for maybe Ron Weasley AKA Rupert Grint.

Every scene that Don Johnson is in he is meant to be the jerk boss of a scammy insurance company but what he really comes across as is someone who didn't study their lines and has no idea how to appear to be human on screen.

It is really surprising to me that of all the people that are in this show, most of which I have never heard of, they are ALL far better actors than Johnson is.

If you get a chance go and peek at an episode or two of this show because especially if you had Don Johnson as part of your childhood, you will probably find his complete lack of acting ability to be quite amusing.

I'm interested to see if anyone can refute my assertions here but if you need proof, please, by all means watch an episode or two of this show "Sick Note" and tell me what you think of ol' Don.

Sort:

If you think he is a bad actor you should check out some of the music he has put out. Probably about as bad as Hasselhoff without the massive German fanbase. You might not hate his acting so much. He was good in Tincup but honestly Costner made that movie as amazing as it was. I enjoyed watching Nash Bridges when it was on. Good supporting cast, cool cars.

Tin Cup is the refute that people often come up with when I say he is a bad actor but honestly, I think almost anyone could have taken on that role opposite Costner and looked good. Dan doesn't really have to do a whole hell of a lot in that movie.

I never knew he released any music. oh this is going to be fun.

You are right. Costner really does elevate anyone he is on the screen with. Not gonna lie, I enjoyed Waterworld. Some of his speeches in Tincup are just epic.

I too enjoyed Waterworld despite its obvious missteps. It was great entertainment even though it was completely implausible and the tattoo map on the girl wasn't helpful or necessary.

I will not refute your assertions, but in fact will amplify them.

Not specifically as a direct attack on Johnson, but a huge percentage of 80s TV actors. Most of the shows we love to reminisce about from our childhood are utterly unwatchable today. Well, not necessarily all of the actors in the show, but at least the supporting cast.

A few years back we decided to watch all of MacGyver again. Oh my God! There are so many ridiculously bad actors. Quantum Leap was another one. It is as if they all went to the same school of cheesy acting.

On a side note.. I am wonder if Don Johnson is the reason for the nickname of the male body part.

I have made a mistake at several times trying to revisit my childhood only to quickly discover exactly what you just said: These shows, and the people that were in them - sometimes even the stars of the show - are not good. I think Little House on the Prairie is one of the only exceptions.

I too went back to watch Quantum Leap and after just a few episodes I was thinking to myself that I can't believe that show was ever popular!

Johnson = pp.... yeah, how did that get started?

I feel like I remember kids joking around calling it their "Don Johnson"... Then it got shortened to Johnson maybe. But even then it doesn't really explain why they called it that to start with.

Hrmmm.. it's good in life to have people we hold on a pedestal as the ideal subject of the human form, the Pinnacle of mankind, the highest point that we can submit before we become Godlike. It is at times hard to find these Effigies to the immortal beauty of man. But I'm glad you presented such a to us today. I have no criticism, but now I have a new goal. Thank you

I'm happy to help out in your path towards complete enlightenment :)

Wasn't "Tin Cup" Kevin Costner as I don't remember Don Johnson in that one. Miami Vice is definitely showing your age as I remember this one and no other films he was involved with. He was around and just vanished which was lucky for us as I agree this guy could not act.

Don played a minor supporting character in Tin Cup. I don't think he was often cast as the star of anything major outside of "Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man."

I also loved to watch movies. It is very good hobbie. Movies teaches a lesson. Movies not only the cause of entertainment. Personally I love to watch action movies.

well just stay away from Don Johnson movies I guess. :)

In the Philippines during the late 1980s (Miami Vice was popular there), it was rumored he was "uncircumcised" because he was bad actor.😂

Is this common to label someone as uncircumcised if they are not very good at something?

Yeah, you are termed that way in the Philippines by way of street talk if you are amateurish.

Everyone weekend i am watching one action and fighting movie. I also learn lesson from movie story and also to watch some funny movie. Thanks for sharing your review about this movie and actor.

well that's what they are there for... at least in theory
