TWe often respond to problems by swinging to the opposite extreme. Once I read about a social psychologist called Jonathan Haidt talking about how bad the kids playgrounds evolved. Not long ago, but maybe still during childhood, playgrounds had concrete as a floor and toys that you could hurt yourself. Nowadays, if you go to a playground, you don't see see-saws or metal slides anymore and the ground usually is from a material that can make falls less painful like rubber or wood fiber. For this psychologist, this extreme is bad because kids don't learn that some actions have consequences that can harm themselves. So he mentioned that humanity likes this extreme thinking. And I agree with him.
I mentioned in another post how sometimes historical injustices shape how we judge people today. Women need to be treated well in society, but I don't need to suffer because other people mistreated women in the past or even nowadays. That guilt can make us become the abusers. Women are still a great chunk of victims of abuse, but there is a big proportion of men also suffering domestic abuse by their partners. In the UK for example after an interview between 2024/2025 of 5.1 million people 3.2 million women suffered some type of abuse (around 12%) and 2 million men (around 8%) also suffered some type of domestic abuse. You can find this here . My point is that we should fight any abuse that still happens to women, but also be careful not to say that every man is an abuser. Because the victim can change sides.
Another point is the UN voting yesterday that concluded that the African slave trade was the gravest crime against humanity and that reparations are a way to address long-term structural consequences of slavery. I am from Brazil, and I know how slavery was a crime for sure according to our standards nowadays. And Slavery killed many Africans until they were freed, especially in the Americas. In Brazil, they were freed in 1889, in North America a bit earlier than that. There are still countries that use a slave system in Asia and even in African countries like Eritrea. That's what we should fight about to end. But why continue to punish people in other countries who did not even participate in slavery, since it was a long time ago?
I was born in a former colony of Portugal, and for sure, that's how they colonized our country, which is essentially what made what we are. A colony that was just exploited is like a child learning to live by itself. Because of that, most countries that were exploited are now third-world countries. But should we continue to blame the Portuguese and ask their citizens to do some repairs because of that? Of course, if countries want to help countries that are going through bad moments, that's always welcome, but charity can't be forced. We need as humanity to help others and condemn what we currently think is the right thing to do.
Slavery shouldn't happen to any other human being nowadays. Minorities being killed and being prejudiced just because they are different shouldn't happen again, and I recognize that it still happens. After the voting, the US recognized that they committed errors in the past with Africans, but how should responsibility be handled today? Nazi Germans killed Jews during the Holocaust; they paid and invested in education about the topic, but should Germans still pay debts to the Jews in the long term, even if it is paid? As humanity, we just need to be aware not to repeat the same mistakes. My take is that the oppressors in the past can become the victims of today just because of eternal guilt. Something that wasn't working well, like playgrounds in the past that were killing a lot of kids, can be turned into the total opposite and harm kids in another way.

Não faz muito tempo, talvez ainda na infância, os parquinhos tinham piso de concreto e brinquedos que podiam machucar as crianças. Hoje em dia, se você for a um parquinho, não verá mais gangorras ou escorregadores de metal, e o chão geralmente é feito de um material que amortece as quedas, como borracha ou fibra de madeira. Para esse psicólogo, esse extremo é ruim porque as crianças não aprendem que algumas ações têm consequências que podem prejudicá-las. Ele mencionou que a humanidade gosta desse pensamento extremo. E eu concordo com ele.
Mencionei em outra publicação como, às vezes, as injustiças históricas moldam a forma como julgamos as pessoas hoje. As mulheres precisam ser bem tratadas na sociedade, mas eu não preciso sofrer porque outras pessoas maltrataram mulheres no passado ou mesmo hoje em dia. Essa culpa pode nos transformar em agressores. As mulheres ainda representam uma grande parcela das vítimas de abuso, mas há uma grande proporção de homens que também sofrem violência doméstica por parte de suas parceiras. No Reino Unido, por exemplo, após uma pesquisa realizada entre 2024 e 2025 com 5,1 milhões de pessoas, 3,2 milhões de mulheres sofreram algum tipo de abuso (cerca de 12%) e 2 milhões de homens (cerca de 8%) também sofreram algum tipo de violência doméstica. Você pode encontrar esses dados aqui. Meu ponto é que devemos combater qualquer abuso que ainda ocorra contra as mulheres, mas também ter cuidado para não dizer que todo homem é um abusador. Porque a vítima pode mudar de lado.
Outro ponto é a votação de ontem da ONU que concluiu que o tráfico de escravos africanos foi o crime mais grave contra a humanidade e que as reparações são uma forma de lidar com as consequências estruturais de longo prazo da escravidão. Sou do Brasil e sei que a escravidão foi um crime, com certeza, de acordo com os nossos padrões atuais. E a escravidão matou muitos africanos até que fossem libertados, especialmente nas Américas. No Brasil, eles foram libertados em 1889, na América do Norte um pouco antes disso. Ainda existem países que usam um sistema escravista na Ásia e até mesmo em países africanos como a Eritreia. É contra isso que devemos lutar para acabar. Mas por que continuar punindo pessoas em outros países que nem sequer participaram da escravidão, já que isso aconteceu há muito tempo?

A escravidão não deveria acontecer com nenhum outro ser humano hoje em dia. Minorias sendo mortas e sofrendo preconceito apenas por serem diferentes não deveria acontecer novamente, e reconheço que ainda acontece. Após a votação, os EUA reconheceram que cometeram erros no passado com os africanos, mas como a responsabilidade deve ser tratada hoje? Os nazistas alemães mataram judeus durante o Holocausto; eles pagaram e investiram em É importante educar os alemães sobre o assunto, mas será que eles ainda devem pagar suas dívidas aos judeus a longo prazo, mesmo que já estejam quitadas? Como humanidade, precisamos estar atentos para não repetirmos os mesmos erros.A minha opinião é que os opressores do passado podem se tornar as vítimas de hoje simplesmente por causa da culpa eterna. Algo que não funcionava bem, como parques infantis no passado que matavam muitas crianças, pode se transformar no completo oposto e prejudicar as crianças de outra forma.
