오미자나무는 오미자과에 속하는 낙엽 덩굴성나무입니다 전국의 산 골짜기에 흔하게 자라며 세계적으로는 일본 중국 러시아 동북부에 분포합니다 꽃은 5,6월에 흰색에서 분홍색계열의 꽃을 피고 열매는 8,9월에 붉은 색으로 익어갑니다

아주 옛날에 백두산 서남쪽에 울고 웃다가 죽어가는 아주 무서운 전염병이 돌았습니다 온 마을이 초조와 불안속에서 지내게 되었는데 이때 오씨라는 의사가 와서 새벽부터 밤늦게까지 열심히 마을 사람들을 치료하여 점차 호전되었습니다 그런데 오의사는 너무 과로하여 그만 세자식을 남겨두고 본인이 세상과 하직을 하고 말았습니다 남겨진 오씨 삼형제는 아버지의 유지를 받아 마을 사람들을 치료 해야겠다고 결심하고 산으로 약초를 구하러 떠났습니다 깊은 산속을 혜매다가 너무 피곤해 잠시 잠이 들었는데 산신령이 나타나서 너히들의 선행에 감동하였느니라 옆에있는 신선열매를 따다가 사람들을 치료 해보라는 것이었습니다 형제들은 꿈에서 깨어 일어나보니 지천에 붉은 열매가 있어 이것을 먹어보니 달고,떫고,맵고,짜고 하지만 이것을 먹고 난후 피곤이 사라지고 힘이 솟는것이었습니다 마을 사람들은 그 이름을 오미자 오씨네 아름다운 아들이라고 불렀는데 시간이 지나면서 다섯가지 맛이 난다는 오미자로 알려지게 되었다네요

동의보감에는 “몸이 약하고 몹시 여윈 것을 보하며, 눈을 밝게 하고 신장을 덥히며, 양기를 세게 한다고합니다 남자의 정(精)을 돕고 소갈증(당뇨병)을 멈추게 하고, 열이 나고 가슴이 답답한 증상을 없애주며, 술독을 풀고 기침이 나면서 숨이 찬 것을 치료한다”라고 기록되어 있습니다 오미자는 인삼과 거의 같은 수준의 귀한 약재로서 널리 애용되었다네요
