Hello everyone. In the world of anime, gore is one of the genres that can either create genuine suspense or inflict trauma that makes the plot unforgettable. It doesn't matter what story or plot it uses, whether it's long or short, and there's one I'd heard about and, although extremely short, I had the chance to watch once. I noticed that it is indeed very graphic and represents the strange and bizarre element that this genre can have, so without further ado, today I'll give you my opinion about "Pupa."
Hola a todos. En el mundo del anime, el gore es uno de los géneros que llega o bien a causar verdadero suspenso o también esos traumas que hacen que sea inolvidable la trama. No importa qué historia o argumento se use, o bien sea extenso o corto, y justamente hay uno del que había escuchado hablar o conocido y que, aunque es sumamente corto, una vez tuve la oportunidad de ver. Me fijé en que, en efecto, es muy gráfico y representa este elemento de lo raro y bizarro que puede ser este género, por lo que, sin más, hoy les daré mi opinión acerca de "Pupa".
Written and illustrated by Sayaka Mogi, this work, a blend of horror, suspense, supernatural, gore, and drama, began as a manga published by Earth Star Entertainment in 2011 with a total of five volumes. It was later adapted into an anime in 2014, directed by Tomomi Mochizuki and produced by Studio DEEN, consisting of 12 episodes. The short length of the episodes was heavily criticized at the time. The story follows Utsutsu and Yume Hasegawa, a close-knit pair of siblings living on their own after their parents' divorce. One day, the younger sister sees red butterflies and is subsequently infected with a virus that transforms her into a monster capable of feeding on any living being. Her brother must protect her and uncover the mystery surrounding her.
Escrito e ilustrado por Sayaka Mogi, es una obra con género terror, suspenso, sobrenatural, gore, drama, el cual comenzó publicado en formato manga a través de la editorial Earth Star Entertainment en el año 2011 con un total de 5 volúmenes, y que posteriormente pasó a la adaptación al anime en el año 2014, dirigida por Tomomi Mochizuki y el Studio DEEN, con un total de 12 episodios, los cuales tienen corta duración, cosa que fue fuertemente criticada en su tiempo. Nos trasladamos a la trama en la cual Utsutsu y Yume Hasegawa, una pareja de hermanos muy unidos, llevan una vida viviendo solos debido a que sus padres están divorciados, hasta que un día la hermana menor ve mariposas rojas, siendo luego infectada con un virus que la convierte en un monstruo que se alimenta de cualquier ente vivo y que su hermano deberá protegerla e ir descubriendo el misterio que envuelve a estos dos.
There's something about this anime that makes great use of sound, which is very pronounced at certain moments, especially the sound of the older sister biting and the rhythmic, detailed sound of her eating. It surprised me how memorable it is, almost like a way of recognizing the plot. I mention this because the person I watched this anime with, specifically in this way, was as if reliving the scene for the first time, and it affected them deeply. So, for those sensitive to these kinds of sounds, it becomes a truly powerful experience.
Hay una cosa con este anime y es el hecho de que juegan mucho con los sonidos, siendo muy pronunciados en ciertos momentos, destacando lo que es la mordida y el rítmico sonido detallado de la hermana mayor comiendo, sorprendiéndome a mí de que sea algo que se llega a quedar muy marcado, algo así como un método de reconocer la trama. Y esto lo cuento porque la persona con quien vi este anime, justamente en estas artes, era como si reviviera la escena por primera vez y le afectaba, por lo que de alguna forma, para quienes son sensibles a este tipo de sonidos, llega a ser una total experiencia.

Of course, the graphic theme is present; It is not like other animes that become extremely bloody. What happens with this one is that they play with the mental part of the protagonists, revealing the truth of a past and transforming the family trauma into a secret that becomes stronger and more constant because, precisely, I believe, the issue of the duration of each chapter is to create that tension in those who watch and make them go quickly to see what's next. It's like those cases where the plot is not so unique, but it is assembled well with visual and sound elements; the pain not exaggerated, but more realistic, and knowing how human curiosity works in something and putting it in this story, so, although it becomes predictable, what happens in the plot is very tempting to see every aspect.
Eso sí, el tema gráfico está presente; no es como otros animes que llegan a ser extremadamente sangrientos. Lo que pasa con este es que juegan con la parte mental de los protagonistas, desvelando la verdad de un pasado y transformando el trauma familiar en un secreto que se va haciendo más fuerte y constante porque, justamente, creo yo, el tema de la duración de cada capítulo es para crear esa tensión en quien ve y que vaya rápido a ver en qué sigue. Es como esos casos donde la trama no llega a ser tan única, pero la ensamblan bien con elementos visuales, sonoros; el dolor no exagerado, sino más realista, y conocer cómo funciona la curiosidad humana ante algo y meterlo en esta historia, por lo que, aunque llega a ser predecible, lo que pasa en la trama es muy tentador ver cada aspecto.
This anime, personally, wasn't one of those that traumatized me. I actually enjoyed it, appreciating the details and seeing how each character mentally relives their past experiences. So, I highly recommend it, and it's a good option for those who just want to enjoy themselves. I'd say everyone will experience it differently, which I think is a big plus. Este anime, personalmente, no fue de esos que me generaran algún trauma, sino que podría decir que lo disfruté buscando los detalles y viendo cómo regresa mentalmente cada personaje, por lo que para mí es un buen recomendable y para quienes solo buscan disfrutar es una buena opción.
