Reputation economy

in #reputation10 years ago

We are all looking for ways to ensure that the Steem platform is an everlasting platform due to the fact that we have an interest for this to happen. During the past few weeks which I have been on the platform I have been meeting a lot of very interesting people :) Each and everybody on the platform have different views on various aspects. I just love it. I have even changed my views on a few things. But that is not what I want to talk about today.

One thing that I have noticed, is that it doesn't matter where in the world each of us is from, we will all stand together against someone who is doing or even trying anything that can hurt the reputation of Steemit - we will all stand together. This unity is independent of race, gender, religious believe, or any differences of opinion which exists between us.

When someone hurts the reputation of Steemit, they get hurt by the people of the platform :) Beautiful isn't it.

I guess there are many reasons for the brother / sisterhood of the community of Steemit, but one obvious reason is that we are as human beings, are emotionally invested in the things we share. Sure there are people, which are here for just making a quick buck, but those of us with long term interest, will be rewarded in the long run and will fight together t survive in the long run.

In my mind there are no way to build this platform without friction between users, but at the end of the day if we all have the same goal, we will unite! Another point that I should raise:

The desire for recognition is a global truth

A large portion of the younger generation are on the platform for different reasons than the older generation, but there is always a place for each generation to work together. I have seen a lot of conversation about the price of Steem and Steem dollar over the past few weeks. A key point what I want to make about that is:

Reputation and reward goes hand in hand

A bad reputation will and always should give less reward as a good reputation. We as human beings care much more about our reputation as we make out to. I referenced the following experiment in an earlier post, but would like to mention this again.

Reputation makes us feel good. But the link between reputation and reward is more
direct and powerful than you might think. In 2008 the National Institute for Physiological
Sciences in Aichi, Japan, mapped neural responses in the brain to different rewards.
One reward was financial; subjects played a card game and were rewarded with money
for winning. The second was reputational;
subjects were shown a picture of their face with a positive or negative description
underneath, supposedly written by their peers.
When the subject’s brain was monitored it showed that the brain responded in exactly
the same way to the financial reward as it did to positive reputation.
In other words, our brains consider personal reputation to be as valuable to us as money.

I have written many posts, about how important it is to build a good reputation on the platform. Please have a read through.

My question: If we as humans feels so strong about our personal reputation, should we not find a way to include the reputation score in the algorithm for the distribution of SBD and Steem power?

I do not have the answer, but believe it is something to consider, as building a good reputation is part of the way the human mind works. Nobody which I know in any case, enjoys having a bad reputation. I still believe that Steemit needs to create a middle class, which will result in more even distribution of rewards.

How do we create a middle classe?

Your comments would be appreciated.

I wouldn't have a clue as to how to build a middle class on Steemit but I probably have as much, if not more, joy watching my reputation score rise steadily. It helps me affirm that keeping a consistent presence here is worth the time and effort. My goal is to grow and invest, but I also love to mentor others.

It is an interesting question. Immediately I thought in my head that maybe someone with high reputation scores could have 1 or 2 votes a day that had a "Power Boost" Where it was going to be a fairly big multiple of what they would have. But then I figured it would just get gamed like anything else on here. It is a really tough problem to solve. Anything that comes out will be used in a way that will benefit the individual.
I felt like the power slider bar was a good idea so things could be spread around more but then I had a main whale upvote me at 3% power and his voting power was still at 99% all the time when I would look at it on steemd.com. I just don't really get the point of that when they are so scared to use any voting power. Then I had a dolphin upvote my post at 9%. It almost started to seem like a person leaving a $0.02 tip at a restaurant. I don't understand why they were doing that. Perhaps to just show moral support but keep their voting power at 99 or 100% so when they put up a post they would be able to pay themselves more.
There is also the issue of these "fake" / secondary accounts that keep poping up that are unverified that get huge payouts and are upvoted by whales. Everyone in the comments is asking for verification which never comes but the whales keep upvoting those posts. The only thing I can think of is that some of the whales are just upvoting those accounts because in reality they created them and it is a great way to get additional payouts or they know the person who made the fake account and are taking a cut from the rewards. I feel like half the rewards each day are going to this phony stuff. And in reality I don't see a way to stop it. I was going to do a post on it and I have a lot of proof but I was too scared that I would get black listed by some whales and they wouldn't upvote me anymore for speaking out. I'm even worried to post this comment. Thanks for reading.

Thank you for saying that, it was brave, but more importantly, it proves that the reputation of the whales is taking a bit of a beating, but that reputation is not reflected in their "Reputation Numbers".

(I am not saying whether or not they have earned "either reputation".

Good stand.

Thanks! It is scary to speak out because we could get black listed but I really want to see Steemit succeed. It is really cool and one of the best opportunities in social media and crypto right now.

Your reputation is already reflected in your rewards.
What we call reputation here on steemit isn't reputation, it's just a measure that someone liked some content you had at some time.

Your real reputation is how many followers you have that upvote you on a regular basis.

BTW upvoted! ;)

Hi all, my laptop just packed up. I am typing this on a tiny keyboard on my phone so will not be responding to the comments before later today. Thank you to all for reading and showing interest. Chat soon

Reputation @jacor is very important and to be onest I don't have an anwer for your question! (This means that I will keep checking this post until someone will anwer...hope someone will know the answer)
My way is just making good content and learning from mistakes and sometimes when I drink a cofee or some tea in the evening I like to browse in Steemit and search good posts like yours to just upvote the sh.. out of them!
I think that this reputation will inspire people to create better content here on Steemit.

Interesting proposition and great points to back it up. It seems natural to me that reputation should be included for Steem distribution.

And fantastic positive views of the community. Good post!

The current rep score algorithms are too primitive to make any decisions based on it. In that spence the first edition with numbers from -9 to +9 was much better, because it did not pretend to provide a lot of information without actually being able to do so.
Double figures are making people think there's lots of sofisticated calculations behind, but in fact there's little meaning behind so far.

Another valuable post @jacor !
I love posts that stimulate thought and especially SELF REFLECTION. Self reflection is the most valuable as it is the only way to evolve and to truly live consciously.
Obviously not everyone will agree on everything but as you said pretty much EVERYONE cares about their reputation.
I would point out that some people do LIKE having a "bad" reputation but in their eyes its a "good" reputation so it still kinda proves your point yet again hahahaha sorta like a tough guy who wants to be perceived as a hard ass not to fuck with etc. Yet there are also people who would perceive that as good characteristics not "bad" ones so then again its still the same point.
Basically again not everyone will agree on everything not even what reputation even is, yet everyone does care about their reputation and have their ideas about what is "good" and what is "bad"
Steem On!

Ironically, I believe the middle class will become well established as steemit becomes more popular (has a very large user base) being that all the early minnows that stick it out will likely grow into dolphins.

The problem with that is - A.) How long will that take? B.) Steemit must grow to a large audience.

The catch is in order to grow into a large audience, we need a middle class that can support new contributors as opposed to just a small group of whales.

Quite the dilemma.

not sure - i think it's a problem of censorship- people will only post what will make their reputation go up - means they are not posting other things.
so i dont think it's a good idea.

This is a noteworthy idea. I'd also argue that reputation score should have some impact on how rewards are distributed or what kinds of rewards one can expect to see from activity here. I think, personally, that content creation shouldn't be affected, but certainly curation rewards being weighted by reputation makes sense; after all, the higher your reputation, the higher your standing in the community, and thus the more widespread or valued your opinion is.

I don't have a definite answer either, but as you said, it's something worth considering.
