January 22, 2022--I. Prelude from Dominica III post Epiphaniam from L'Orgue Mystique by Charles Tournemire

Another work from the L'Orgue Mystique by Charles Tournemire. This is the prelude on the Introit from the Third Sunday after Epiphany. The chant is featured prominently in all these works as can be heard by the flowing, conjunct, and rhythmically free melodic material. However, the music does rarely appears as the original plainchant in the Liber Usualis. In this case, the first phrase of the chant begins on the Swell Manual (Flute 8' and Fugara 4') before becoming an accompaniment to the second phrase which is played on the Great manual (Salicional 8' and Bourdon 8'). The pedal picks up the sixth phrase with the drop of a fifth (Principal 8') while the Great manual repeats the second phrase two octaves higher. As these portions of the chant come to a conclusion, the swell manual once again gets the chant: this time sounding the third and fourth phrase of the chant. The pedal resounds the sixth phrase of the chant (beginning with the descending fifth) while the great manual sounds the fifth phrase of the chant. Altogether, a wonderful piece of music paraphrasing bits and pieces of the original plainchant for the third Sunday of Epiphany.
