I totally agree with you, this second season of Peacemaker is much stronger in terms of script and character development than the first. What you said about the “other dimension” concept struck me as spot on. It's clear that James Gunn wanted to use it to give Peacemaker an emotional punch, not just to do multiverse fan service. Seeing Chris confront the life he could have had with a different father and his brother alive...
And about the ending... I totally get you! Gunn's excessive hype is sometimes a double-edged sword. It wasn't the “epic” ending we were hoping for, but a very clear bridge to what's coming in the new DCU. Personally, I liked that it was an ending more focused on setting the stage for continuity.
