My Hive Dinner Party Under The Stars

Braai Time

Families and friends have sat around a fire cooking meat for thousands of years, originally, apprarently meat was mistakenly dropped into a fire pit made for warmth, it tasted better cooked. Now to clear up confusion a fire pit is normally round, the word braai orginated from Dutch word "braden" (to roast meat), has no connection to a barbeque, a braai is a braai so we will leave it at that....

Source

Congregating around a braai brings cultures together in an atmosphere of gathering to forget differences, each has a technique in how they braai, what meats they select for ultimate flavour along with special breads baked, pap or salad dishes placed out with the food.

Braaing is a tradition, part of our National identity so when I send out my invitation it would be to sit around a pit fire, sharing stories local and international over a glass of wine or whatever, then speak Hive or whatever....

An old half drum with beers, ciders, soft drings and wine on ice will be waiting to one side, another table laden with all tasty dishes of South Africa, like Malay sosaties ready to cook (vegans can have vegetable sosaties), or African pap topped with chakalaka, a dish of Indian sambles, mango (a must with boerewors), delectable breads baked in three legged pot or directly on the fire, tastes we relish! While some will discuss the best wood to use for ultimate flavour.

Source

No extravagant dressing, shorts or longs with T-Shirt, a light jacket in case you get cool don't really know that feeling since the fire is there to warm you up, with dry logs waiting to be loaded, after the meat has been cooked to perfection.. After eating, chatting ensues sitting around sharing, yes the child always comes out to play sticks with marshmellows to toast before enjoying sweets at midnight, or later.

Beauty of a braai is you can move around, stand and chat or sit down under starlight twinkling above, it's not enclosed so numbers would not need to be restricted.

Side tables would need to be presented in a lovely traditional manner here I would call on @jaynie being far more creative in ideas, perhaps a little pairing with wines to assist the guests Jaynie!
Call out would go to @braaiboy to get the right wood, roaring fire going then get the food cook to perfection, cause that is what he enjoys most! Braai Boy
Breads and Puddings I am useless, @lizelle is a wunderkind in all delicious sweets and breads having years of experience! Lizelle
South African contingent would be @papilloncharity to welcome all, while I serve the refreshments, feed wood onto the fire, once salads and foods have been prepared one does not stand around serving each other, everyone tucks in and enjoys an evening of fun. Papillon

0597-Sunset.JPG

Not restricting numbers, many overseas guests would be included to enjoy the experience with locals who all work harmoniously together each has strengths and weaknesses, mine has never been formal dinner parties!

Now who to invite and why ladies first, @dswigle who loves to travel we can compare cities visited and experiences, @brittandjosie can critique the food, out of the land of Orange, or Italy, many familiar Dutch things to see here, will be fun @porters love of the outdoors touching the sky from a different angle, learn more about how to survive long winter months @redheadpei will comfortably compare the North to South, find out more in ancestory from old country @silversaver888 to share in her knowledge in hobbies, pick her brain on how to recognize a good coin from an average coin. Knowing all would love experiencing Afrofantasy ambiance. this will be an evening to remember, sampling different dishes, which I am sure will result in feedback.

7783-Jupiter-Moon-Saturn_8Jun.JPG

So now for more guys who will add to the throng of an all nighter - @galenkp would appreciate the outdoors, help keep stoke the fire waiting for sunrise, @jerrytsuseer to scribe some poetry for future reference, Victor @wwwiebe keeping watchful eye, steering conversation into some semblance of order, @johannpiber to capture sunrise and sunset photography, with Zac reminding him which side it comes up or goes down.

Sorry Jaynie this could go on, I have tried to limit myself, if I had a party it would be under the African sky, with a night jar calling, crickets cheerfully singing, noise of wildlife out there somewhere.

0907-Moonset.JPG

Visitor requirements comfortable clothing, preferably long pants, we will supply bug spray, closed sneaker shoes with socks to protect ankles from said nasty bugs, a light jacket or sweater, an empty tummy and a lot of cheer.

Much love and cheers 🥂 from NYC

Always place at this table 😄 - Go Big or Go Home!

I have just come home, tired from a long day and read "the invitation and No extravagant dressing" - of course I come in shorts and t-shirt 😃 and I will bring you some !BEER and !WINE in case some of the other guests drink more than you expect 😉

Thank you so much for this kind invitation, Joan, a Braai in South Africa amongst such great other Hivers is something I would never want to miss.

Maybe the next morning we could make a little trip to the mountains or to the sea for some sunrise photos, but I will need Zac with us because I will certainly not know where she will come up 🤣

!invest_vote

Casual in every which way, comfort comes first along with a camera, a ritual where we let our hair down. Something if planned at the right venue will have accommodation close by for a quick shut eye if needed 😁, normally not needed....

Photography across the bush one does not always have mountains or sea close to hand, other fascinating features of vast plains before you just as exciting.

One very cold !BEER after a walk taking sunset photography tastes Oh so good, followed by delicious dishes mostly prepared in or on a fire with good !WINE call it a party under the stars...

Early morning coffee brewed on the fire another kick start to enjoy sunrise!

!ENGAGE 10

Yep, comfort is most important, I wouldn't stay anywhere long in uncomfortable clothes, even with the best camera I wouldn't feel right ... so you wouldn't ever see me in a suit, unless I get married, but I am married already and I haven't worn a suit since ;)

There's almost everywhere something interesting I believe, you only have to seek it or wait in patience, what I can't 😉

A morning without a coffee is not good and might make the whole day bad ;)

A braai is indeed just that - a braai! Nothing can be taken away and little ever added to the experience :) Love the guest list and how everyone has their "place". As for the side tables - any old log or flat rock would do... or in the case of our last camping trip - the boxes from the blow up mattresses, and other stuff haha!

Love how your chose to do this prompt in you own style Joan! As a Saffer... it speaks loudly to me!!

Thank you for the invite Lady Joan and oh yeah, what a night we would have.
A real African evening sitting around the fire with full stomachs just like the Khoi San did and maybe we can sneak the folks some of the spirited home brewed skokiaan to loosen their tongues 🤣
It will indeed be wonderful company and @galen have been threatening to come. I have also been working on the mountain goat's case, @johannpiber and maybe one day we could get all of these folks and many more here for a party.
I want to show the ladies the Sossusvlei pan in Namibia and I think that @dswigle maybe saw it. We can book a short flight, so the guests will have to stay for a week at least, but preferably two weeks.

Good morning Hannes,

You know already that we are in a big country and it's made even bigger by all of the neighboring countries, as a lot of their people live here. Then we also have access to the countries higher up on the African continent, so yes, like I said, one can never see everything in one lifetime.

Well, we might get enough for one bottle of spirits 🤣

Yes, we are slowly but surely cooling down and it's a pleasure now to be out in the early morning.

Nothing nicer than mixing together outdoors, skokiaan would do the trick quite admirably.

Most would need two to three months exploring this land if they really wanted to see it all, a good weekender would be a great starter...

Louis Armstrong - Skokiaan (South African Song)

!LUV

Hahaha, the skokiaan will certainly loosen the tongues and the stories will become legend.
2-3 monthes will only scan the surface from Upinton to the Cape and then up to Messina, then tipping back from St Lucia down the south and wild coast back to Cape Town. Much in between will be missed.

We have a German couple that live here for 6 months in summer and in Germany for 6 months when its winter here. The guy complained to me that South Africa is too big for them to see it all.

Blessings and thank you for the song.
!LUV

Lived here all my life, seen a lot, still not all. Augrabies Falls Northern Cape into Namibia still to be ventured through.

South Africa is a tourist dream value wise, if locals meet visitors at airports taking safe routes with no surprises it could be great fun....

Oh yeah, I have travelled far and wide Lady Joan, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Lesotho and for somec starnge reason haven't done Mozambique. But then again our business was stainless steel dairy plants. Then we also built a fertilizor plant in Port Louis, Mauritius.
So yes, this old horse has done some miles, but now I long for the backroads to all of the little towns that we skipped in between.

There are 155 towns in the Western Cape Province and I have maybe only been to 15 of them, so there is a big mountain to climb. Thing is our car is not very suitable to dirt roads and I have to make a plan for an old 4x4.

South Africa is indeed a tourist haven but I would advise every tourist to only travel with trusted locals.

Blessings!
!LUV

So much to see locally one does not need a passport nor all the paraphernalia required, a good 4x4 would do the trick with road being what they are.

Visitors to our shores most definitely need to have a trusted local taking them around, life is not what it was alas....

Bright sunny day here, lovely weather!
!LUV to get you through the day....

Had some rain this morning and you guys should also start cooling down that side 🙂

Yep, a 4x4 will do the trick as then one can see things far and wide and with a good guide it could be a very pleasant experience. Luckily I am my own guide, but don't know how I will get along with a crowd 🤣

Some !LUV also to you my friend.

Sitting around a fire sharing a meal is certainly an old tradition; it's all about sharing culture and, most importantly, friendship. I'd be honoured! And I'd arrive hungry. That looks like some fine food to be had there!

Most relaxing way of mingling and getting to share stories or ideas.

It has been fun to think of how one would be able to have people from far off destinations arrive to enjoy our most traditional way of gathering together.

Who doesn't love a good braai? Stoke that fire @galenkp... He was in charge of that, right? I may have to run back and look. I was so delighted to be invited here, this actually the continent that I have seen the least of. Can you believe that with all the amazing things you have here? Someone I know went to Kolmanskop, a Ghost Town in the Namibian Desert. What a photo op that is! The sands of time have not slowed down. It was one of those boom towns that the Germans put up when diamonds were discovered and disappeared when it was stripped.

You have the most beautiful views, and I am having such a nice time here, dancing with the moon, shining down on us. I see I am the first one here, so tell me what I can to help out? I brought you some flowers. Where can I put them?

MF10.jpg

Loads of dancing, talking, singing and flowers can be placed anywhere away from burning fire, I think it will end up being a pyre fire ridding all negativity and keeping wildlife at bay.

Namibia is a place on my bucket list, I have different sands collected in a bottle my in-laws brought back, an amazing place where my brother experienced drives in dunes, seeing old graveyards he said it is an amazing place to witness.

We would love to welcome you to the old world, raw in beauty when outside of city life.

!ENGAGE 20

It is one of my least visited continents, although not always by my choice. There was a time when Kenya scared the beejesus out of me and I said I would never step foot back, but, that is a lie. It is not the place it once was and well, neither is half the world.

I think I am ready to reengage with some of those places that were taken off my list.

I am ready to dance!!! Let's go!

There are places that scare even locals living here, we know from living here where to go or not to go. Not alone with being cautious, getting out into the bush is another life/lifestyle out of cities.

Well organized pickup from airports to destination then to have some fun and talk/dance the night away...

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Thanks for the tokens!

This is so delightful and dreamy that it made me cry, @joanstewart! It made me recall so many wonderful times with family or friends all gathered around to toast and laugh and tell stories and be together, and just how long it seems since it was possible to be able to do so without fear.

Sorry Jaynie this could go on, I have tried to limit myself, if I had a party it would be under the African sky, with a night jar calling, crickets cheerfully singing, noise of wildlife out there somewhere.

Not only could I smell the meat sizzling on the braai, and hear the sounds of laughter and the clinking of glasses, but I could hear the night birds and crickets and wildlife. The experience is complete! (At least in my imagination.)

We have all been locked up too long, under considerable mental stress, a night like this would be the ideal way to mix and mingle, chat through the night.

Hyena chuckling, possible lion roar, night birds calling or hippo wandering out of water look for food grunting along the way, night life is as varied as during daylight hours.

Good to see you too would love to come along and join in the fun, even if only in thought @jayna 🤗

Dutch word "braden" (to roast meat), has no connection to a barbeque, a braai is a braai so we will leave it at that.
Picky picky picky, that's our @joanstewart! ha ha ha... this sounds like a de LIGHTful way to spend an evening or three.
It has been SO LONG since I've had the place, and inclination to have a fire, sit around and eat and drink the night away, strumming on my GIT-tar... I would love to join your braai

↑Upvoted↑ and ←Reblogged→

That would be swell, some music to get campfire songs going or dancing, most definitely would be a night to remember.

To be honest I have not pulled off an all night'er in quite some time, but his would have good reason!

!BEER

I haven't done an all nighter in a VERY long time, and couldn't manage it now I'm afraid.

Comfortable seating to quietly catch a couple of zzzzz's when necessary, otherwise off to bed for you 😁

Most likely, it would be off to bed.
I dunno, I'm a crotchety old man now. I grow bored rather quickly with most conversations, tho I tend to run off at the mouth because I spend so much time alone, I have no one to talk to/with 99% of the time, so when I DO have the opportunity, I will talk too much.
Add alcohol to that equation, and I'm liable to get in trouble.
Now if I'm ♫♪PLAYING♫♪, then I can hang out more. I'm weird I guess, perhaps I am narcissistic?

Interesting conversations I'm sure you will join in, if not enjoy listening to the evening sounds, evening like this never puts pressure on anyone.

Your guitar will give you confidence to share 😄

This sounds like a pretty legit evening and I'm pretty happy to be invited along with some very esteemed others! I'd say I can manage to keep the fire stoked, in between doing all the eating, and that a great time would be had by all!

Plenty of fire bugs around to help stoke that fire @galenkp one thing never lacking!

Food normally flows from one thing to the next, early meat tasting to check whether cooked to satisfaction, later toasties as suggested by Jaynie.

Not sure when anyone pulled an all night'er...., sure been a long time, something most enjoyable.

!LUV

I reckon it sounds pretty damned good!

Would sure be interesting and loads of fun!

and you know what one of the best things about a braai is @galenkp - the cheese TOASTIES :)

I had a suspicion this would be the case so, late night toasties under the stars it is. I'm in.

YAY! :)

I concur.

The toasties last night were awesome! Of course, they were Australian, and that means there could be anything in there!

Cheese would be the secondary ingredient @dswigle with bread being the primary. We could add in a tertiary ingredient just for you though...Wombat? Shark? Spider or snake? Maybe we go with something far more traditional like koala. Nothing quite like a cheese and koala toastie. Let me know, I'm happy to oblige for you and @jaynie.

Have had the pleasure of tasting your kangaroo meat over here some years ago, bloody tasty to say the least! Now you forgot crocodile steaks...

Thick skinned and delectably mocha-colour-skinned too

Don't know anyone white, well not like they try to make it sound here, years under the sun, thick skinned... till a mozzie interrupts with buzzing around....

Thanks for joining into a full sharing with words here (conversation) @dswigle @jaynie and @galenkp perhaps we will have to plan a dinner in Aus!

Australia is a long way to come for dinner, could work though.

South Africa is as well, cheaper destination for visitors though 🤣

Thank you for having us, Joan! @joanstewart! ❤️ You have been the hostess with the darn mostest!

Imagination is a powerful tool, so glad you arrived to enjoy!

Yes. That is what happens when we have a conversation over a 24 hour period and I couldn't look back on what I had said. It sounds nuts, I agree.

Sorry to drag you in. :)

Lol...Don't be sorry, probably would have crashed the party anyway...Me and my crocodile skin.

OMG... Did I really say skin? Of course, I was trying to imply, in not so delicate terms, tough hide. Not tough skin. Pffft.

Cheese is my younger sons vegetables - so he says!

Lol...I'm going to start saying this.

And he said nothing........... Zero, zilch, zip, nil, nought, 0 🙃

OooOOoooOOOooo... you're going to be in troubleeeeee.... hahaha!!!

:)) Story of my life.

KEKEKEKEKE!!!! I can relate ;) @galenkp strikes me as a thick skinned Aussie, so you may be safe :D

Sweet Jesus, woman! That is gator skin, right there! He is the dude, without the 'tude. ❤️

Thick skinned and delectably mocha-colour-skinned too.

Resigned to your fate it seems; Comfortable with it. It the hat fits I guess. :)

No...Only you get yourself in trouble with me in that way nutbag.

Thanks for support @steemitbloggers life is fun when we venture out to think about it....

I can't help but feel the fun looking on from a distance. So many fun happy guests around the fire pit, enjoying the food, wine/beer and talking, talking, talking. A lovely idea @joanstewart.

When you out in the veld with this type of evening everyone who can make it would be more than welcome.

Most gatherings here in South Africa people arrive with friends or family, you cook or plan around fifteen to feed, could end up feeding fifty quite comfortably.

Planning an interactive informal Indaba with creatives it would naturally be thrown open to all who could arrive.😄

A braai indeed seems the way to go looks very fun , yummy and mouth watering some thing i need to try some day 👍

It's a very relaxed way of enjoying good company, pit braai is quite popular in Australia as well, will catch on as people realize how social this way of getting together can be.

It is actually also popular in Australia but I find lighting up the bbq is simply and very sociable, although I must try this pit braai in the near future it certainly would have a wonderful taste.

I think a sunken pit braai holds the heat longer, also easier to douse out flames if wind picks up.

Big enough to do many different meats and vegetables or breads directly in the fire. Considering spit cook, normal braai, 3 legged pots, the pit if designed well could do a lot!

It does make sense can't wait to try this maybe next time out camping 👍

If in Australia, just don't use old termite holes since they zig-zag underground with dry grass which will have a fire running in no time at all 😁.

Understood thanks for letting me know that 👍

It would be a fun time sitting outside on a warm evening in Africa and enjoying drinks and good food. Sitting around an outdoor fire is popular here Joan with sticks used to roast marshmallows and hotdogs. Usually nothing fancy. A jacket is nice to have on hand for a cool evening here.

Enjoy a cool !BEER while sitting around the braai.

A lovely way to entertain getting to know people, fire is something done here regularly, and most places on visiting will offer a good size area.

Marshmallow on sticks is another international fun loving thing to do.

Thanks for the !BEER and comment, visit like this would be amazing, perhaps Hive will one day make dreams possible.

Now that's is the way to dine. Anytime you get to share a meal with friends while dining outside is a plus. One can only sit for so long and being able to get up from the table and venture around is a good thing. A little exercise makes for more room for the second and third plates of the wonderful food you show here.
I"m not a picky eater and like trying new foods, and this post includes some stuff I have never heard of.

Ah you are welcome to gate-crash, more often then not the party size is never fixed, arriving with friends and family has never ever been an issue.

Over indulgence normally commences with small meals throughout the night with different tastes, seconds and thirds are normal to keep going.

If you enjoy new tastes be sure to follow @jaynie, @lizelle and @braaiboy, all present dishes with recipes or ideas to try out 😉

wooohoooo... now it's a party!

hello dear friend @joanstewart good afternoon
These are the things that I love about our company (Hive) that you always learn something new, I must admit that I have never heard of braai.
I really appreciate that you have shared this experience.
Have a beautiful afternoon

Over here with our mild weather, there is no excuse not to sit outdoors and enjoy meals under the stars. We have these gatherings quite regularly, no reason needed except gathering to enjoy each others company.

There is something wonderful about cooking over a fire and sitting around a fire with friends and family. I hope we can do this again this summer.

Takes us back to our basics, a place to relax and enjoy life no matter which part of the world. A little more comfort perhaps to our forefathers being a bonus in the here and now.

What a terrific post. The was the perfect dinner party, great menu, good friends, good wine and a perfect sky.
Awesome, well done my friend.
