Shopping, shopping, and shopping!
This is the last part of this Shopping series. Previously, I introduced 3 other places to shop in Japan, they are
- Departmental Stores or Shopping Malls
- Discount or General Merchandise Stores
- Lifestyle Retails Chain Stores
And now, let's continue with the next two!
4. Shopping Streets or Arcades
If you are keen on street fashion, you would love the shopping streets or arcades in Japan. Shopping streets or shopping arcades are very similar to each other and both comprise rows of shops. However, shopping arcades are usually sheltered. Shopping streets or arcades feature trendy street fashion shops, novelty shops, niche vintage shops, popular chained cafes (such as Doutor, Excelsior Caffe, Tully’s Coffee, Starbucks, and Pronto) and street food (such as crepes, senbei rice crackers, and takoyaki). It is also a popular hangout place for the younger crowd and those on a budget. As such, it is a great place to see the latest trend and novelties in the market.
Popular shopping streets or arcades:
- Takeshita Street (Harajuku, Tokyo)
- Bunkamura-dori (Shibuya, Tokyo)
- Omotesando shopping street (Tokyo)
- Ameyoko (Ueno, Tokyo)
- Shinsaibashisuji shopping arcade (Osaka)
- Tanukikoji Shopping Street (Sapporo, Hokkaido)
- Teramachi-dori (Kyoto)
JR Vacation says
- Shopping in Japan is incomplete without visiting the shopping streets. It is wallet-friendly and allows you to experience the Japanese style street fashion.
- Not every shop is tax free and some shops do not accept credit card payments. As such, it is important to have sufficient cash on hand.
- Some shops have their own membership cards, which are eligible for tourists and you can accumulate points for cash rebates. Do feel free to inquire about it. These cards don’t have an expiry date and so it can be used again for your future visits.
5. Drugstores or Pharmacies
Drugstores or pharmacies in Japan are unique compared to other countries because they don’t only sell counter medicines, but also feature a huge range of cosmetics and skincare products. It is truly a heavenly shopping venue for ladies who love Japanese cosmetics and skincare! They are usually located in shopping streets or shopping arcades.
Popular drugstores or pharmacies:
- Matsumoto KiYoshi
- Ainz & Tulpe
- Tomod’s
- Daikoku Drugstore
JR Vacation says
- These drugstores or pharmacies are usually tax free. Do download the shopping app called IKIDANE NIPPON on your phone for exclusive coupons for purchases in Matsumoto KiYoshi!
- You may refer to my previous article on my personal recommended buys from Matsumoto KiYoshi.
