Shree Krishna Bhojanalay - Thrifty thalis for an easy and quick dinner

A week ago, I visited Shree Krishna Bhojanalay close to my home for dinner. I had seen this place multiple times before and since my wife was not there for dinner, I came to try out this place for some local vegetarian food.

When I came I did not know what to expect. The place screamed cheap from the outside but I have been surprised many a times by the taste of the food in such places. There is huge diversity in the city of Mumbai and everybody has the possibility of eating good food, thanks to places such as the one I am reviewing.

I couldn't see a menu when I went in. I asked for what was available and I was told I could gey a thali. 100 INR meant unlimited amount of whatever had been cooked. I ordered that but the girl at the teller told me that is not absolute value. For INR 50, I could get a rice plate, that had 4 rotis, rice, daal, cauliflower curry and Kadhi (a yoghurt curry). Thanks to her, I saved 50 INR.

The food is prepared in the evening so it was served quickly.

The plate of food above has a lot of local food. Daal Rice combination ia a staple dish at most Indian households. For 50 bucks, expecting Basmati rice and more spice would have been a bit much. The combo was quite good.

The bread or rotis were a little thicker for my liking. However, I guess they are meant to fill empty stomach after people have toiled during the day.

The best things on the plate were Kadhi and Cauliflower. Kadhi is a Punjabi dish if savoury and spicy and it's Gujarati version is less yellow and sweeter. This Kadhi, a yoghurt based vegetarian dish, was bang in the middle of the two versions and perfect for me. The cauliflower dish is a favourite of mine, something I like to eat once or twice a week. The spice and salt level was reasonably low. Both dishes were low on oil and were perfect for evening meal.

One cannot expect super clean environment in such a place, so this is not for everyone. However, if you live in Mumbai and are used to eating street food, this should be ok for you.

Value for money, need I even answer?

At the end of my meal, I could see that the place was also selling Indian desserts.

I ordered one yellow peda for INR 10, to quench my sudden urge for something sweet. It was nice, super soft and rich with khoya and mildly sweet.

The place gets a 3.5 on a scale of 5 from me, 5 being best. It's a place one can visit once in a while. The lack of options is a problem but if you are looking for value for money vegetarian food, then this is a good place.
