Without much deliberation on this, anyone in my part of the world can claim he became an adult at the age of 18. After all, that's the legal age in my country.
It starts with the ever boring birthday songs.
I don't know how it's done in your part of the world, but the type we sing here is no different from a sleeping pill.
You can sing along if you know the tone.
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to you
Happy birthday, happy birthday, happy birthday to you.
How old are you now
How old are you now
How old are you now, how old are you now.
As a person that has been waiting for so long to become an adult, you've got to clear your throat and shout 18. Once this stage comes to an end, the rest becomes history.
To spice things up, some people start applying for
- National Identity card
- Personal Voters Card
- Debit Card
- Others start looking for a boy-girl relationship to jump into.
Well, welcome to adulthood but this isn't where the story ends.
Ridiculous misconceptions about being an adult
I've seen some people in their late 20s act in a very childish way. When l say childish, l mean it.
They want to be given a medal for being a playboy. They think the best way to show their worth is by going on a spending spree when it's clear they have no investment in their portfolio.
Being 18+, using two or more phones, developing a deep voice, walking on a red carpet, ganging up against harmless people, is a few of many ridiculous things used as a criterion by people to see themselves as adults.
I won't be digging into the shameful things people do in the name of being adults. Stuff like that is best reserved as a pep talk on 18th birthdays.
Factors that qualifies someone as an adult
To keep it simple, these are the factors that define someone as an adult;
Making the feasible effort to attain Financial Independence via legitimate means.
Taking responsibility for our actions and inaction
Being willing to take care of others the way we want to be taken care of.
Showing a high level of maturity in our decision making and other spheres of life.
You can add other factors below. The list never ends.
With all that is already said, let's have it on record that this post is written in my attempt to do justice to the 19th question in this #bloggingchallenge resource.
Hehe... #Bloggingchallenge, We crossed path again
The question is, " when did you become an adult"?
My answer is, l became an adult the day l started being conscious of the aforementioned factors and many other factors that qualify someone as an adult.
For the record, l'm no fan of birthday songs but, l wouldn't mind singing you to sleep with it. The louder the merrier.
Peace ✌️. Till we meet again.
Thanks For Not Missing Any Full-stop Or Comma

All the aforementioned 'syndrome' is an indication that one is being metamorphosed into adulthood. They are the same features for teenagers all over the world.
At this point, parents, counsellors and the society have a role to play to ensure boys/girls around that age bracket do not miss their steps.
Unwanted pregnancy, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STDs) are usually rampant among the peers if they are not controlled or guided.
Thanks for putting up such a beautiful piece on the subject matter.
Parents has a big role to play because many lives are in their hands. I wouldn't wait for anyone to get up to 18 before he would start taking responsibilities for his actions.
At the moment, l find it hard to blame parents because the society as a whole does not like delegating proper role to young lads. I believe that when people are given responsibilities, they easily grow into a position.
Well Done Bro
