Building A Wall

in Hive Diy1 hour ago

Well, today was eventful, and it was filled with so many twists and turns.

A few weeks ago, I told Aimee's parents that I was going to put a large 20ft retractable fence for the driveway, so the kids can play outside during the summer.

Then Aimee's dad suggested building a wall and getting a gate out there instead. Initially, I said the retractable thing would be fine, but then we started brainstorming ideas for the driveway, and the conclusion was that a wall would be better.

The main reason to do it is that their front garden gets the sun from 11 am until it sets, so it's a much better place to sit. But, without it being enclosed, it's hard to relax with the kids out there, as Kaleb sometimes decides to make a run for it.

This is what it was like at around 10:30 this afternoon.

It had just stopped raining long enough for us to get out and start work on it.

There are lines there where the old wall used to be, and Aimee's dad was joking about the fact that he tore it down only to rebuild it a few years later.

We were going to remove the old cement and bury the wall, but opted to just build it directly on the driveway.

I didn't really have any idea which way was better, so I just rolled with whatever he said.

It started raining twice throughout the afternoon, and near 5:00 pm, we decided to call it quits for the night and finish the following day, as the weather wasn't cooperating with us.

After a brief hiatus, we got back to it and powered right through to completion, which I didn't believe was going to happen.

Kaleb was playing with some sand in the shadow of the new wall.

Throughout the day, my son was helping us, and he did a great job. He helped with the mixing and pointing, and he also built his own small wall out of off-cuts of the blocks.

He had a lot of fun out there and was delighted with it when the capping went on. He had one small accident, but it was nothing major, just a bit of a scrape.

We just need to finish off the pointing and attach the new gates.

Once the garden is enclosed, I'm going to buy some AstroTurf for it, and then Aimee and I are going to buy a swing and slide set that we found online.

It is going to be such a major difference when this job is finished, and everyone in the household is going to get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

Not totally an easy work. You did well.
