Fledgling: Part 38

in Freewriterslast year

Greetings Readers

I have had a great writing weekend. There are so many twists and turns, so I hope that you all continue to follow!

Martin worked tirelessly with his eyes closed, diving deeper and deeper until he was sure he had gotten what he needed. He then bandaged the limb and tiredly smiled at his father.

“I will need a few hours rest before I can do that again, but I have saved what I could of your arm. It should function with an integrative system.”

“Look who’s up.” Said Maxine from the doorway.

Bolx and Martin looked at the door to see Maxine and Aidan coming into the room with trays of steaming cups. Aidan looked exhausted but seemed to be handling his injuries far better than Bolx was.

“You clearly have your mother’s healing ability.” Said Bolx softly.

Aidan nodded and stepped forward to let the Saith take a cup from the tray.

“How are you feeling?” he asked.

“Sore, in dire need of a shower but I don’t think I can manage to stand on my own for long.”

Aidan looked over the wounds and the guilt was eating him alive. He should have been stronger. He should have been able to help the Saith.

“Get those thoughts out of your head.” Said Martin softly. “Red-Eye was at his peak. The only reason you weren’t killed outright is because he actually wanted you to get away. His main target was Bolx.”

Aidan blinked a few times at the young man, not sure when he learned of the Wolven’s name. He looked to Bolx, who shook his head and said, “I never mentioned the name of the Wolven who attacked us.”

“You didn’t have to. Mother told us, made sure we’d have the supplies needed.” Said Martin. “Should have had you on a drip ages ago, but you weren’t delirious and seem to be handling the injuries well.”

“Not the first time I have been cut apart by a Wolven.”

“Regardless. Sister.” The young man looked up at his sister. “I don’t have infinite energy; I got as much of the necrotic and damaged tissue as possible. The both of them need at least one bag each, even if the boy shows no sign of infection.”

“Yeah, hold this.”

Maxine dumped the tray in her brother’s lap only to disappear from the room for a few minutes before returning with two bags filled with a pale-yellow solution tucked under one arm while in her other hand she was dragging a drip stand.

“If you’re anything like our father was, you’re gonna start moving as soon as you’re feeling better. I thought a drip stand would be better for you. I’ll have to dig another one out for Aidan…”

“I’m not leaving this room.” Said the boy defiantly.

Martin held his hand up, breaking up an argument before it could get started.
“I’ll get the drips started, you’ll eat, and we’ll go from there.”

Bolx said nothing as Martin went about doing what he needed to. As soon as the pale liquid disappeared into his arm, the relief was almost immediate. He felt his muscles relax, and he could think beyond the pain.

“How long have you been here?” he asked as he sipped at the soup.

It was rich and salty, and he was sure it was beef. It made his stomach cramp painfully, reminding him how hungry he actually was.

“Uhm.” Martin leaned back in his chair and looked up at the ceiling, “Six months, I think. It constantly snows and is dark three-quarters of the time, so telling time is a little difficult.”

“Why Mother brought us to a planet where eight months of the year there is snowfall, I will never know.” Said Maxine as she leaned back in another chair.

At some point, she must have had a shower, as she was wearing clean clothes now. She had plaited her long blonde hair, and it was hanging over her shoulder. Bolx’s heart ached, knowing that with his missing hand, he would never be able to braid Saita’s hair again. If he ever saw her again.

“Which Saita brought you?” he asked.

The twins exchanged a glance before Martin patiently explained once more, “Yours brought us.”

Bolx shook his head, “Not possible. She can’t travel through time.”

Aidan gently put a hand on Bolx’s left arm. The Saith looked at him, and Aidan said softly, “She could.”

Bolx’s brain was still reaching for information in its fevered state, and once it stumbled across that memory, Bolx could only nod.

“She could, you’re right, but that ability was sealed as far as I know.”

“I don’t know what to tell you.” Said Maxine. “She looked like our mother but spoke. She told us what was to come and our role that we had to plan. We spent the summer months building this home. She was specific about the number of rooms too. She made sure we would have enough supplies to last at least two years for at least nine people. Told us we may be here for a while, but as soon as you arrived, we would only have six months to prepare. Look, we aren’t lying; we gain nothing from…”

Bolx held his right arm up to silence her. “I’m not calling you a liar, Maxine. I’m trying to understand. I see your mother in you and your brother, your lineage is clear. Martin looks a lot like my little brother with a hint of my mother and you, you are an almost spitting image of your mother. I believe who you are, but I cannot understand how Saita got to you. When she travelled through time, it was because she copied the ability but had no idea how to use it. It was later sealed by Shareik if I recall correctly.” Bolx looked to Aidan.

The boy nodded his head.

The twins sat in silence for a long time, and it was Martin who spoke first.

“Mother regained her ability to travel through time. Shareik granted it to her.”

Bolx wanted to question it, but then he realised why Saita would have wanted to seek out the Heavenly. To her, it would have appeared that her husband-to-be and son had been killed and devoured by a Wolven. She would have done anything to get him back. However, that just raised more questions. If she knew this much, why hadn’t she stopped the attack? None of this made any sense. All of this seemed to be too convoluted.

“Maybe, maybe time has to move in a certain way.” Said Aidan.

Bolx nodded his head. The boy was right. Having Brucel return to the Saith had bolstered Saasha’s resolve to fight the Fell Dragon. Perhaps their so-called death had had a similar effect, and removing it from the equation would have ruined a future where they could have been saved.

He finished his soup and got to his feet. Maxine tried to stop him, but he felt strong enough to stand on his own. He placed a hand on her shoulder and squeezed.

“Tell me what I need to prepare for, and I will do what I can.”

“Me too!” said Aidan as he got to his feet.

Martin seemed to want to argue, but Bolx said, “He just completed two years at the Academy, don’t diminish his achievements. He faced Red-Eye with no fear and is the only reason the two of us are still alive. Don’t discount his strength or bravery.”

The twins looked at each other, sighed, shrugged, grinned, and nodded their heads as one.

And now back to Saita who is facing Dragon Kay down.
